Thumbs up Your Thoughts on purchasing high mileage 2013+ S4 ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I've been looking at Buying an S4 for years and I'm finally ready to Step-up after owning a 335xi, and currently an Acura TL SH-awd. To keep the S4 purchase price down, I'm considering a B8.5 ( 2013 ) with 60k-90k miles to keep it in my price range. I've stalked the threads here and now wanted to ask you, the experts about your experiences & thoughts of what to avoid & what to expect. Thanks in advance for your input!

I have 104k on mine, no real problems. In general, a 6 speed will be more reliable (lower repair costs) than the DSG over time/mileage.

I seriously don't think you will have an issue. Most of the 2013s are solid when it comes to transmission, the sport diff, and the water pump. What I would be sure of is the steering on them. Since some people have an issue with the electric steering and they don't like the way it feels.

Congrats on coming from a 335xi to an S4. Same move I made and I don't regret it. Love every bit of the S4 compared to the 335.

Also look into purchasing a lower mileage 2012 or 2011.

one of the things about high miles modern German cars is how to be sure its not using a lot of oil, or has a lot of carbon build up. when my friend sold his S4 at 100,000 miles, you do not even want to know how much oil it was using. people have often done oil changes at 10K, (factory stupid interval) and over time, that can end up doing some bad things internally in the engines. tranny needs to have been serviced regularly too, or it may be near the end of its trouble free period by 100K. steering on 2013's was a weak point. first year of electric steering.

If you do buy one, I suggest getting an extended warranty, The thing about the 6MT, which I have, is that the clutch assembly will eventually need replacement on your dime. With warranty, if the DSG fails, it will be covered to repair/replace. Please don't get one without a Sport Dif!

when i purchased my 2013 about 2 1/2 months ago, i knew i had to purchase a slightly higher mileage one to be able to get one at the price i could afford. i ended up purchasing a 2013 with 47k miles on it for $32k. like Dr GP mentioned, i purchased an extended 3 yr, 36k mile warranty (not through fidelity like everyone suggests because they were quoting me like $4k for the gold level ), but through a company the BMW dealership worked with for something like $3000. luckily i was still under the factory warranty and had audi check out the car before the warranty expired, but i'm at 50.5k miles now and i haven't had a single mechanical issue. good luck with the purchase!

epl's dsg tune brings the shifting to a whole other level of refinement and performance. I have no regrets at this point going with a dsg on my car for a DD.

I bought a 2010 with 70k on it and just passed 78k the other day. The thing is tip-top. I definitely would not be scared of a higher mileage car. Most people who bought B8 S4s aren't poor, so they typically have taken care of them, had them service properly, etc.

2011 here, second owner, picked her up at 55k mileage, she now has 101k on her. I went stage 2 around 65k and I'm still on original clutch, gripping strong. The only thing I've had to replace was the thermostat, other than that runs absolutely fantastic. I have owned the B5, B7, and now B8 can confidently say the 3.0T engine is by far their most reliable and in my opinion strongest engine yet. I made sure the previous owner wasn't a puts and had all paperwork for service. Best car purchase of my life....truly look forward to driving her everyday.

I'd agree here, with the caveat that it's a one owner car. 2 or 3 owners would worry me about the consistency of proper servicing.

Did you do the work yourself? I need one soon and wanted to know if anybody has actually done it. There's no DIYs to be found...

79k and running like new. As others have stated the thermostat is a ticking time bomb. I'm pretty sure mine is stuck open, but having an upgraded boost cooler keeps it from overheating.

It would only overheat if it's stuck closed....

In November I took the plunge on a 2013 S4 with 61k miles on it. When I test drove the car it needed a new front brake sensor (got new pads while at it), new front wheel bearings, and the biggest concern is that the transmission began to leak (only when operating temp got very hot).

Make sure you drive any car you look at hard. Listen carefully and you'll hear/feel any wear and tear that needs to be taken care of. The dealer took the car to Audi to fix the transmission, and three weeks later it was fixed. If the dealer does the right thing and takes care of any needed repairs, then you will get a solid car at a great deal.
