Does your RS4 sound like this?

Ok here is the reason for my post. I have owned a RS6, A4 and now a 2005.5 S4. My next step will be a RS4. I'm looking into different sound exhaust setups. I know the exhaust debate over "what is the best setup" has been beaten to death many times. This is not meant to turn into a debate or "mine is bigger than yours" type of thread. I like the power that a proper exhaust can give to a vehicle, but i also want it to sound good. Deep rumble at idle and not overbearing on normal driving, but something that turns heads under acceleration. I want people to do a double take when they hear it. I love the FI setup, but the flowmaster setup sounds like sex. Open headers/strait pipes make power but i cannot drive around my town like that, not to mention the lady and the kids have to be subjected to the car as well. I heard this on my home theatre setup and omg it sounds awesome.

Does this sound like your RS4?

Pretty sure he's a member here.

I've had numerous setups on my s4 rs4 -- catless, catted, stock, milltek, magnaflow, JHM LTH and FI. It really is personal taste and safe to say videos don't do justice...

Always have a soft spot for my first b6--here's a really old video I found catless JHM headers FI...

If I had to grab an exhaust for my rs4 I would get tubi or go full JHM--I love JHMs tips aswell..

Props to the yellow RS4 owner. sounds awesome! Man, Blackstallion, that sounds awesome. Maybe a little loud for my taste lol. i need to listen to it on my home system. The computer just doesn't do videos justice. I had a VR6 GTI that i put headers on and did a strait pipe back. I put a few different systems on it to test the sound. One was a magnaflow and i had a cherry bomb glass pack laying around. The cherry bomb sounded ok but holy crap it was LOUD. I installed it where the cat used to end at (at the end of the test pipe) I drove it around for about 10 seconds until i went and changed it LMAO. I like loud, but i've been pulled over too many times for my exhaust being too loud so i'm looking for something a little more reserved. Thanks for the input!

i'm a huge fan of the capristo. Works with stock S valving (and has a separate remote if you want to bypass and have sport mode on all the time) and i think looks the best for the car. Not cheap and only 2.75" but the craftsmanship is king. With sport mode off it basically sounds like a stock exhaust with sport mode on to me. With sport mode on, it's not quite as loud as JHM but i actually like it better that way, i think full JHM sounds too much V8 american muscle.

I am running the Milltek Resonated and like the sound. It terms of performance, I think JHM is the way to go, but I personally don't care for the sound characteristics. I think the best sounding exhaust for the RS4 is the Tubi Rumore. It really highlights the character of the engine. But it is anything but subtle. Here are some great videos of the sound. But the owner of the vehicle in the videos (MikeFish) ended up switching to a different exhaust system. Even though he loved the sound, it was too loud.

Advance to 3:10 in the following video:

Tubi makes a non-rumore (not loud) version but I'm not sure how the sound compares. Another exhaust system I really like is the HMS-Tuning but I don't know if you can get it here in the States.

Another vote for fullback jhm, the wider pipes will give you the low-end rumble you want and a thoroughly tuned/deliberate top end. Sounds freaking incredible catless - this video convinced me to make the purchase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B72nXdoj3WE

Thank you guys so much for the input! i really appreciate it. The Tubi Rumore seems just a little loud for me. lol the Capristo Exhaust is interesting. Love the tips! I'll have to wait until i get home from work to listen to it on some real speakers. I have always wanted a car that had the sounds of an exotic(lambo, ferrari, R8) but just enough stealth to fly under the radar to where if anyone didn't know what the RS4 was, they would be forced with the question "that the **** was that!?!"
and AvusPdx, i go to the portland area often. Maybe one of these times when im around or if you venture south twords salem at all, maybe i can hear what your car sounds like?

Jhm here and I think all the Jhm full exhaust cars sound best. Just my humble opinion. Had mine a few years now and I still love it.

    Also proven hp gains...

It sounds like the Milltek might be what you're looking for. My car has the unvalved/unresonated Milltek on it and I think it's awesome. It has a similar sound to stock but louder. It's not obnoxiously loud, but when you open it up it is loud enough to make a statement. Normal cruising with the windows up it is pretty subtle and won't bother passengers. (I think these cars are pretty well isolated from outside noise) Best of all it makes the car sound pretty exotic. I have heard my car from the outside several times (car used to belong to a friend of mine). I would say this video is a pretty good representation.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MiyKHqZWl8

This one is valved but I don't think mine is really any louder at idle. Maybe slightly louder at low RPMs.

as for the milltek. if u saw what one looked like after 2 years of being oon the car I think u would change your mind. even guys who live in no salt states have them rusted to shit. also no power gains over stock. with jhm if u keep the cats and resonators is not too loud its when u lose the cats and resonators that it gets a bit too much. my car has 2 high flow cats and resonators. I think its perfect.

do some research on that miltek before u buy there is tons of exhaust threads here and AR. if u don't care about making the car breathe u should at least care about longevity of the parts.

Does your RS4 sound like this?

Have a milltek now. Had a milltek on my a4 and neither of them are rusted.

Milltek was on the a4 (still on) for about 7 years.

Yeah I think this is the route I'll most likely go with. I don't know what mufflers I'll choose. I'd love to hear I sound clip, that would be great

I like how my other car sounded when i put a resonator on it. I love loud cars. I just can't be driving one around now haha
My car is only loud when you get on it. at cruising speed its very tame, second you give gas it wakes up. I honestly couldnt have asked for a better option.

Just Google rusted milltek and a ton of threads and pics come up. Not just for the rs4 either. Milltek kinda sucks right across the board. Plus did I mention no power gains over stock.....

Just saying if yer gonna spend money on exhaust why not add some power and sound instead of just sound.

That bothers me because it's obvious they're using subpar products to enhance their profit margin charging prices similar to their competition superior products.
    That's messed up!

    Few questions.
I'd like to keep my flap system in place, while increasing the tone of my exhaust to a nice noticeable level.
    Now.
I see some x pipes that comes with the resonators, is that any important?
What's the difference between having an x pipe with or w/o resonators?
What would be my best set up as I've mentioned that allows me to keep my S function while having a throaty meaty sound?

I wouldn't recommend going without resonators. Without them there is a lot of drone which I find annoying when cruising down the hwy. If u don't mind it being super loud in the cabin ALL the time then go without them. In my car it's slightly louder than stock when cruising. It's only really loud at wot and the only drone I get is under 2k rpm.

As for keeping flaps... I don't see the point but if u really want them then your options are limited to just a couple exhausts. Millek and tubi i believe (someone correct me if I got that wrong).

The x pipe u most definately want. Proven power gains on almost all platforms. There is a thread somewhere showing proven results and explaining exactly how the x pipe works. Long story short it works.

resonators are downstream before the mufflers. the x pipe itself is not resonated.

heres one more of my car at the track. my buddy has a youtube channel so he made a little video. car sounds awesome I think and this run was only a 12.66 but my car ran 12.50s all day long with that setup. for a tune and exhaust still on stock clutch I was very happy with the car.

milltek and capristo are the ones that keep the flaps. It's nice to turn it down sometimes, that's all i can say.

    Capristo..... that's right. Thanks.

Piggies is one of the best mods u can do for the rs4. I chose to go with the full downpipes but piggies are a good cheap mod. I have a set of stock downpipes for sale if u want to gut them
