HELP Rock Chips and comprehensive claim

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I was stupid and waited a little too long to get a clear bra and am dealing with some serious pitting and three large chips, i'm looking into doing a comprehensive insurance claim and was wondering if I should I look into getting ecodes, black optics grille, carbon mirror caps...etc. Also anything I should know about comprehensive claims, has anyone dealt with them before?

it really depends where u r and ur carrier. I live in NYC, and rock chips occurs pretty much every day, so I doubt insurance would pay out a car every month for rock chips

but others have had success in claiming comp for rock chips in the front bumper in other states

getting ecodes and a new grille out of it is quite a bit of a stretch imo

I only asked about those because the quote that I got included new headlights and grille. I'm talking to adjuster today, but the shop was saying it looked like I was "stuck in a wind storm". We'll see how it goes I guess

the adjuster is the key. if they are willing to work with u to get "free" upgrades, then go for it!

comp usually does not raise ur insurance. I had 2 comp claims last year, 2nd one was after 6 months from first, and im still good.

Someone (Brotherowl?) had insurance cover a ton of repairs due to rock chips. You should be able to find the thread if you poke around.

Brotherowl is another colorado driver, so that would be a good thread to find. Thank you!

The shop recommended this route because it's a claim you can make without taking a hit on rates. It seems as thought if you were finding products that would ultimately cost less that it would help the insurance company but i'm not really sure how they work so.

OEM is usually more expensive than aftermarket. it MIGHT not be the same case for your ecodes though. lets say u want an aftermarket rs grille ( cost 300 ) and the OEM one cost 500, they would get u the rs grille ( if u want ) since it will save them 200. im pullin the numbers out of my ass, but that's how it works

ecodes itself is pretty pricey. n/a spec headlights might be the same or less so it really depends. UNLESS u can find them urself for cheap, buy it, and have them reimburse yu.

Well I'll look at the quote from the shop, and compare them to the price that tag quotes for ecodes and run from there I guess. Hope to hear back from Brotherowl and see how he tackled his claim.

So a comp claim is when your car has damage but no other car is involved?

Wont any comp claim show on the carfax after?

I ask because sometimes in the case of a bumper you can have it sprayed for $350 or so and in my case my ded is $250. For $100 I might as well not file a claim

Body shops and insurance companies don't report to carfax if there is no police report. Also the claim would be far north of $350

Did not read, but I have done 3 comp claims for stone chips over the years with no issues at all.

For any insurance claim the incident has to be "sudden and accidental" I have only had claims for rock chips paid one time and that was a customer who ended up behind a dump truck leaving a work zone. Rock chips otherwise would be considered wear and tear and not covered under any kind of insurance policy. Comprehensive coverage literally means "other than collision with a fixed object or vehicle" so things like theft, vandalism, hail, hitting animals and birds, essentially anything flying through the air. Carfax gets their info from the DMV so unless a vehicle is totaled and something happens to the title they wont know about it. As far as getting "upgrades", remember the purpose of insurance is to get you back to your original state, meaning we will pay to put back what you had. Some body shops will allow you to pay the difference on the side but thats something to work out with the bodyshop and not with the adjuster, all the adjuster will do is pay the shop for original spec parts and labor. It is true however that comprehensive claims do not impact your rates.
