Crankcase breather tube question. Plastic pieces.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So the breather tube was cracked and I was taking it out but the base of the tube is stuck in the opening.
I can't seem to get it out and it's very stuck. Now, if I were to hit it from the top and some plastic fell in there. But I got most of it out with a vacuum. Would it be terrible for the engine if there were still some small pieces left in?

Also, that bent metal in the hole is the metal reinforcement in this tube. Except broken.

I think this has happened to literally everyone. As long as it wasn't an excessive amount of plastic you should be ok. Someone else chime in if I'm wrong. So you know, the brass colored piece is the same piece in that sits in the breather tube itself. You can use a set of long needle nose to reach down through the intake manifold and yank it out. Thats what I did. While you are doing all of this, check the T coming off the top of the tube. The other side of which goes to the SJP and the drivers side goes to a PCV. Mine T piece was so thin and pliable that just pulling on it stretched it out. My PCV was all gunked up too so I went ahead and replaced everything from the tube to the SJP and PCV.

Ya, I knew the metal part is supposed to be part of the tube, but the plastic around it is really holding it in. I've yanked on it quite a bit with some vise pliers and there is not too much budging. So I was just thinking of hitting it from the top. But ya, I might need to just replace the whole system because mine is pretty gunked up too. Thank you for the reply.

I had to pull on one side, then move to the opposite and vice versa to finally get it out.

Let is soak in penetrating oil over night and it should loosen most of it up as you have already gone at it quite a bit. Also if some plastic falls in it wont get into the block because of the type of gasket used seals it off only allows passage of vapors.

Just read you are interested in replacing/ cleaning that out. I would not recommend doing that with the intake manifold still on. You need some space for yourself and once you remove it you will have oil dripping out of the pressure sender port for a while. You could just let it drain but I plugged it with a small rubber cork and then cleaned what I needed to and then worked quick to get the oil filter/block breather back on with the gasket before any oil came out after removing the plug. PS I did this with my motor on a stand. There's four bolts holding it to the block good luck.

I would suggest you deform the metal piece inward so it removes pressure from the plastic surrounding it. With any luck it will come out without completely falling apart. I've used a vacuum to get the fallen pieces out before. I suggest removing the oil cap before you do that, to prevent too much vacuum being applied to the crankcase.

This exact thing happened to me while replacing this part. I was able to remove some of the plastic pieces from inside the oil filter adapter using needle-nose pliers a household vacuum, however there is still an unknown amount of debris that has fallen in that I can no longer see when shining a light down into the oil filter adapter. Will these pieces get blown back into the PCV hoses and cause a clog? I'm unsure what the risk is here and don't have much knowledge about how this part of the system works.

It'll be fine. It's a little bit of plastic, there is not much risk. The pieces will end up in the oil pan. You'll be ok.

As long as they dont get sucked up by the pickup tube and block the flow.

They wont even make it that far. The gasket between the breather box and block has a reverse baffle on it. The pieces will be isolated to the box.
