Hi guys, I would love to hear some thoughts and/or suggestions from some of you pros out there with experience with this issue. My car is currently parked in need of chain guides and tensioners, so the motor has to come out. My friend who is a mechanic for Aston Martin told me he has tracked down all the parts we need for about $800-$1,000 and said if i bring him the motor he's do the back of the motor for me in his shop. Its a great deal if you ask me. I could potentially get out of this cheap, if it didn't have this oil consumption issue.
My car also needs new coilovers (~$1,000), and new AC Compressor ($500) among other things... (probably makes sense to do new clutch when its out, right!)
Car has a salvage title and so isn't worth much. scooped it at the auction. I also know I'll probably want to drive for a few years maybe...but then maybe move onto something newer..idk. Maybe not..
Anyway, I DON'T want to open up a can of worms and do a whole new motor or motor build, dumping thousands into the car. I just want to drive it into the ground for a few years, BUT THE CAR CONSUMES A FAIR AMOUNT OF OIL.
Is there a procedure any of you guys know of to deal with this "oil consumption" issue without having to dump thousands on this pos engine? I've heard they get bad rings and or cylinders. Can the cylinders just get a quick hone, put in new rings, and done?
Or have any of you heard about this problem being caused actually by "stuck" rings and not necessarily bad rings or cylinder wear? Carbon build-up causing the rings to seat improperly...and can some engine additive cure this problem? The car was using about a quart of oil a week! But it was also misfiring the whole time! My friend suggested that maybe the misfiring and running rough was causing it to consume the oil.
Any suggestions from guys who have done a quick refresh of the engine, low budget, without a full tear down?
