Oil Consumption, how should I deal with this? motor is coming out for chain guides.

Hi guys, I would love to hear some thoughts and/or suggestions from some of you pros out there with experience with this issue. My car is currently parked in need of chain guides and tensioners, so the motor has to come out. My friend who is a mechanic for Aston Martin told me he has tracked down all the parts we need for about $800-$1,000 and said if i bring him the motor he's do the back of the motor for me in his shop. Its a great deal if you ask me. I could potentially get out of this cheap, if it didn't have this oil consumption issue.
My car also needs new coilovers (~$1,000), and new AC Compressor ($500) among other things... (probably makes sense to do new clutch when its out, right!)
Car has a salvage title and so isn't worth much. scooped it at the auction. I also know I'll probably want to drive for a few years maybe...but then maybe move onto something newer..idk. Maybe not..
Anyway, I DON'T want to open up a can of worms and do a whole new motor or motor build, dumping thousands into the car. I just want to drive it into the ground for a few years, BUT THE CAR CONSUMES A FAIR AMOUNT OF OIL.

Is there a procedure any of you guys know of to deal with this "oil consumption" issue without having to dump thousands on this pos engine? I've heard they get bad rings and or cylinders. Can the cylinders just get a quick hone, put in new rings, and done?

Or have any of you heard about this problem being caused actually by "stuck" rings and not necessarily bad rings or cylinder wear? Carbon build-up causing the rings to seat improperly...and can some engine additive cure this problem? The car was using about a quart of oil a week! But it was also misfiring the whole time! My friend suggested that maybe the misfiring and running rough was causing it to consume the oil.

Any suggestions from guys who have done a quick refresh of the engine, low budget, without a full tear down?

the things I would check before doing anything at all is have your mechanic friend scope the cylinders & check the valve seals, valve cover gaskets, front/rear main seal and valley pan. if there's scoring either buy a replacement engine or get rid of the car. also pull the Intake manifold and check and see if there's oil pooling up on the valves. if there is your valve seals and guides are bad. and you need an A/C compressor and coilovers? you're already 3-4K into this with parts alone. personally i'd sell it IF the block is bad. if you just need valve seals i would personally keep it but thats my opinion

you're in my neck of the woods too, assuming your friend works at AMNE??? great shop btw.

Yes he does. ikr... Its the nicest damn shop too!!

Do you know how to look for these things? do you have experience? I'll pay you to help me look over this stuff and determine! Car is right near Forest hills off Brookley
My friend is so busy, I'm surprised he's offered to do engine. I can't really ask him to come over to the car he works all the time and hates doing stuff outside of work or a shop.

Intake manifold is already off the engine, along with upper timing covers. Engine is still in the car though. Car ran nice at higher rpm's, but ran rough at idle, it was misfiring on one bank, but no cam timing codes, apparently one of the cams jumped a tooth and was off by about 20 degrees. It was at my buddy's at KMHMotors for a while, and we all were figuring motor was still fine, meaning no interference occurred. But None of us determined all of this other good stuff you mention.
Car is only worth $2k as is, so its either a cheaper fix, or maybe an eventual 2.7t swap if this motor is junk.

ya i can probably help you out. it'll have to wait until early January though as i work for a major shipping company and we're swamped with xmas volume. PM me your info and cell # and i'll let you know when i can make it down there on a weekend. I'm just north of Boston so forest hills isn't to far at all. you're very lucky the valves didn't kiss the pistons otherwise...,well you know. i do have borescope to check for scoring, and if you already have the IM off you may know right now if the valve seals are leaky. these engines are hit or miss in terms of how much oil they consume. i'll look out for your PM!

Hey Ben and Justin I see you guys have met.

Good luck going down this road but I think everyone including you already knows how it's going to end. There is no magical fix, and the same thing is happening to all of them.

Get out of this cheap lol, you're spending at minimum 4-5k on a salvage title car - when you have seen me and tony pick up several of them with lower mileage and clean titles for less

Curious, what ended up happening with this? We're the cylinder walls okay?
