    Tire Storage Rack

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I want to do better with my garage management (New Year's resolution, ha). The winter set is on and the summers are once again sitting in the corner taking up precious space (where other junk could be!). Just curious what other folks are doing: any old rack will do, built your own, or 'corners are my best friend'? FWIW, google led me to:

    http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/...IRERACK2_Qty=1

    http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...torage+rack.do

To be honest, they look exactly the same, yet there is $20 price difference on the griot. Just want to get one that I don't have to worry about it having come crashing down, lol. tia.

It's only going to come crashing down if you don't mount it properly.

You can look at the weight rating, but my guts says they are both the same. I got the tire rack one years ago. My only regret/concern is I need to climb a tall step stool (8') and carefully manage 50+ lbs without hurting myself or my wheels. A tire tree is much less expensive if you have the floor space.

Mine are stored in the storage covers and stacked in my shed for the winter...I would love to get the overhead mounts but will be getting on instead for other things like boxes and stuff that take up more room.....as was said the important thing is hitting those studs when mounting. If you do that you will be good to go!

Me ne neighbor has one mounted above his garage door and it is a little sketchy getting a set of wheels and tires up there from a ladder. It helps to have a second person hand you the wheels while you're already on the ladder.

Are the tires going to get flat spotted sitting like that for several months?

no...flat spots come from the weight of the vehicle no moving for long periods of time....with the weight removed there is no risk of the flat spots

I would actually recommend the Tire Rack one over the Griots one. All Griots does it find someone that already sells the rack, and then makes it for themselves.

This is what I was going to recommend. ECS sells a great one that you can move around your garage.

    I have 2 of these: http://www.hyloft.com/heavy-duty-adjustable-tire-loft/

no complaints about the racks. They've been up and doing their job for a few years now. As mentioned, navigating the wheels/tires up there can be a challenge. It is particularly challenging with the larger setup on the SQ5. I'm fairly young now...can't see myself managing it on my own 10 years from now...2nd set of hands is huge!

I've had this one in my garage with stock 18" wheels and tires on it for over a year now. Nicely constructed. If you're looking to save a few bucks this is a nice option.

I have this one from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/HyLoft-01012-T...ords=tire+rack

It is easy to install and very sturdy. However, you have to mount it according to the stud placement in your garage. That made mine wide enough to fit about 5 tires. I just use the extra space to fit kid's car seats when we're not using them.

Isn't an 8ft tall step stool considered a ladder?

I have the tire rack wall mount unit. Easily installed it by myself. I would recommend trying your tire and wheels on it when its on the ground. Easier to adjust when its on the ground. Only pic i have is when it was empty.

My dad put the Tirerack one up in their garage and loves it. He keeps 5 tires on it and it's never had trouble (one sitting on top).

Sad story - I have this kind of rack but am not a big guy. Blew a disk putting up 21" wheels/tires. I'm not going to mount an electric hoist in my rafters to life wheels/tires from now on.

    - - - Updated - - -

Sorry - I meant I'm NOW going to mount the hoist.

I have this one as well, and I would recommend the others if you have an exact spot where you want the rack to be. I had to put the rack in a less than ideal location because that's where it would work with the studs.

I picked up one of these HERE/ since it's only $50 but wish I would have just gone with THIS and left it in the corner of the garage. The studs in my garage (where I want to mount it anyway) are ridiculous....not 16" on center and impossible to find making mounting this securely a challenge that I'm about to give up on.

I have 2 of the red ones from ECS Tuning, but I might replace them with the TR ones because I don't like how my tires are just resting against my drywall. Also it doesn't feel very sturdy but I haven't had any issues with tires falling down.

Work in progress, Sir. Floor went down last week. Floating cabinets go in Wednesday. Then the little things like wheels on the walls, painted German flag, metal prints etc.

The TR piece is nice! Just make sure you have 5 studs (hehe) on the wall you intend to hang it. Because of my many windows, I only had access to 4 on that wall. I had to drill new holes, and ensure some measurements were dead-on, so still NBD, but 5 studs is preferred. Also, before you hang the wheels, measure and adjust the rack width. I did not, and had to pull the wheels right back off, which was not fun being its high up. I took the total, and added 2.5" on each side.
