What is the function of these 'lights' near the rear numberplate

Can anyone advise me what is the function of the two 'lights' above the rear number plate. Are they just reflectors or are they meant to light up?

I have pointed the 'lights' out with red arrows in the attached picture.

Rear fog lights. You pull the headlights switch two times to turn them on.

The one on the drivers side is the only one with a bulb in it. The one on the passenger side can be modded to work also. However since your over the pond both may work on yours?

Depending on the country and year there could be a light in both sides.

Also, I got pulled over 3 times for an "out tail light" before I finally connected up the one on the right too.

    Thanks for the responses.

I can now confirm the driver's side light comes on when the fog lights are switched on. There are so many things to learn about this car.

^^ This. The rear fog is always on the same side as the steering wheel. It's intended to be a visual indicator of where the driver is sitting to help indicate the middle of the road from the rear in heavy fog.

You see my a6 had the same thing, only one bulb on left and always wondered wtf they were thinking. Pulled a double bulb harness out of a newer c5 and now they both light up and it was plug and play, no mods. i know its better to be nice but after the third time the cops pulled me over id let them know they are fogs and not tail lights, there fore you arent required to have them on or even replaced. only brake and tail lights need to work in back as fogs are additional option. knowing life he wouldnt like that and start giving you shit.

Shes coming along slowly. Will make a thread with a few questions soon.

No, i just had them on because i had just installed the fog lamp harness from the newer c5 and wanted to make sure they work and what not. usually i use my front fogs and only turn on rears when the conditions call for it.

Not to judge or anything but it does bother me when people drive with any unnecessary lights on. Makes no sense, especially the front fogs which a very large amount of people seem to do.

    But to each their own.
