License Plate Light Connection - Problem...

So something pretty messed up happened as I was installing some aftermarket LED license plate lights on my A5 (B8). The install was so simple, that I didn't think there was any way anything could go wrong, but I was mistaken. I removed the existing lights fairly easily, just popped them out. The real problem came when I went to put the new lights in. Both of the connections to the car were hanging out of the cavities where the old lights were. As I went to put the resistor pack into the passenger side cavity, I knocked the connector back into it. At first I didn't think this was any big deal, and just continued the install. When I went to try and retrieve the connector, that was when I realized I was f***ed. The hole is so small that there is no way I can fit any more than a finger inside. It seems the trunk lid is one giant hollow piece. I cannot for the life of me, figure out a way to get that connector back out. I tried pliers, fingers, a screwdriver...even a piece of rubber hose with a piece of duct tape stuck on the end of it. Nothing seems to work. The only thing I can think of left to try is to use a fishing hook on the end of some sort pliable hose or rubber something, to try and snag it and pull it back out. I tried all the other methods for an hour and a half and couldn't get it. There doesn't seem to be any other way to get to it, that I can see. But is there? Has anyone else had this same thing or something similar happen to them?

If there is some other way to get into the inside of the trunk lid, that seems like the best option. Does anyone know if there is a way to do this? Or have a better method than one I described above? Would an auto shop have some sort of tool that could assist me? I'm at a loss here. Seems like such a simple thing to do, but I can assure you it's not.

Phone wire and a paper clip. If you don't have phone wire, strip an ethernet cable and pull some of the wires from inside to make a line for fishing. I've used that tactic on other vehicles, and even to get my food out of vending machines when it's tried to screw me out of a bag of chips.

Haha, brilliant. I will give this a shot when I have time to find the materials.

    Thanks!

Otherwise, the trunk liner just pulls away (might have a couple of screws, but I can't remember) and you can gain access that way. I actually had the same thing happen to me. You can also do a search and find the parts to use OEM parts and lights and not have resistor packs for it. It's about $100, but all OEM. Granted you already have the kit.

Yeah I did see that they had "OEM" kits as well.

The resistor pack really isn't that big of a deal to me. I'm just going to tape it down with double sided tape really good. There is a TON of room inside the cavity. If I have any issues with them I will get the OEM kit.

Thanks for the info on the trunk liner! That is probably how I will approach this. Seems much easier than fishing in that HUGE open space. If it wasn't so frickin' big I would just do that, but I think I would have a hard time finding it in such a large area. Anyway, thanks again!

Can anyone help me find a link to a DIY for removing the trunk liner on a B8? I'm having trouble finding anything.

I removed the two screws (made of plastic) that I thought were holding the whole thing on but I still can't seem to pull it free. It seems like it is connected somewhere else. It really barely moves, so it makes me think I'm doing something totally wrong. Could be that I'm just too afraid of breaking something, and need to apply more force. Not sure.

Some instruction would be much appreciated.

Let me look when I get home, but I don't think I had to pull mine all the way off and I'm pretty sure it was all just clips, minus the couple of screws.

Hey this happened to me yesterday! You could get an Asian person with tiny hands to fish it out (that's what I did). I'll take a look at the trunk liner in a minute once I get back to my car
