    Another one, cam issues?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So just today I was reading the horrors of some people having to replace cam tensioner and chain and paranoia kicks in and I try to listen to mine. Well I'm hearing an extra ticking/clacking near the back of the engine (not just the normal injector noise). My oil pump failed 2k miles ago and it's been replaced no other issues currently. Video enclosed hoping you can listen, advice appreciated!

Yep, thats sounds exactly the same as mine before i replaced it. If it hasnt been replaced then i strongly recommended to do so, better safe then sorry.

Just cam chain and tensioner? Also do you think I can drive this very mellow for a week or two until I can replace it?

Normally its the tensioner that starts to make that clacking sound, but you have to replace both the tensioner and the chain for your peace of mind.

You could be driving for thousand and thousand miles and it would still be fine, but the risk of driving like that its not worth the trouble and the money you'll have to spend if that thing goes kaboom. You should be fine driving it for weeks but i would highly recommend to be your top priority on your list.

Okay that gives me some peace of mind. I guess I'll put performance upgrades on the back burner and get this done asap, thanks for the info!

Also I'm due for a new timing belt, I guess this just rushes the process and I can do both at the same time...

That depends on your experience and comfort level. I would say no, it's not hard. It does however require some specialty tools, a decent amount of time, and significant disassembly of the top half of your engine.

I paid an Audi specialist to replace mine last month. Although, the 4hrs it was supposed to take turned into 10+hrs when certain bolts wouldn't unloosen. Still, money well spent. The car is now whisper-quiet @ idle...no more TDI sound.

How much $ did it cost if u don't mind me asking. U bought the parts first or it was parts and labor ?

I pre-purchased the parts through ePay and local suppliers for about $100. The Audi tech that did the work is also a good friend. I paid him $250 for the labor. I've read here that some indy shops have done this job for $350-$400 parts & labor...not sure exactly who though.

Well I took it to a very reputable shop to have them replace the tensioner and chain. Before they did it they inspected of course and said I had a loose exhaust hanger and my heat shield was rubbing against something which could've been what I was hearing. Saying it sounds perfectly fine and doesn't need replacing. Taking their word for it but will keep an ear out and be careful
