    Brilliant Black vs Mythos Black

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys! This is my first post so sorry if anything was done incorrectly. I am planning on buying an S5 in the next month or so and would like to know if there is any considerable differences between Brilliant Black and Mythos Black and which one you guys prefer. Pictures are appreciated. Thanks a lot!

If I remember correctly, Mythos has some light flake, so imperfections will not show as much than on BB, as its a solid color. The metallic makes it a bit more interesting too. That being said, BB is awesome if kept mint.

Definitely, pick Mythos Black which is metallic unless you want flat brilliant black..

Mops is right. I have a Mythos Black RS5 and I would not want flat on that. My old Z is flat paint and it shows every little imperfection and is pain to maintain.

    Brilliant Black vs Mythos Black

Just to clarify, Brilliant is not "flat" but just doesn't have a metallic flake. I went back and forth and went Brilliant. They both look good but if you're willing to put in the work, Brilliant can look amazing.

The advice is correct though, Brilliant is a lot more work to keep looking mint. The thing is, for me at least, I would follow the same routine regardless. With Mythos though you will notice imperfections less and probably be able to space out full details a bit more. It definitely will hide any minor swirls better.

    A few extra thoughts...

Whatever you go with (especially if it is new / ordered) tell the dealer not to touch the paint, no wash, etc. Dealers are a big source of swirls on brand new cars. I took mine straight to my detailer for some minor paint correction and then had a ceramic clear coat applied. A lot of guys here either go with a coating or a wrap. (XPEL, Suntek, etc.)

Ceramic clear RVJ? Who does it and is it comparable to a clear bra?

There are several ceramic clear products out there. I went with CQuartz Finest. Most good detail shops will do it for you. It does have a "measurable" thickness but a clear bra / wrap is going to offer more protection against rock chips, etc.

Essentially it is an additional ceramic clear coat over your factory paint / clear coat. It is harder once cured and helps with swirls, etc. Depending on how you care for the car and your climate they can last anywhere from 1-2 years before it needs to be redone.

Some people do both as the clear can be applied on top of a wrap. For instance, if you wrap the front and then apply the ceramic on top.

    Mythos Black all the way!!
My S5 is BB but like people mentioned its very hard to keep it nice.
I didn't want to wait longer to get Mythos Black but if I had to do it again I would wait.

Thanks for all the input guys! Mythos seems the way to go in terms of maintenance and upkeep. Which color do you all think looks better in the sun, considering I live in Florida? Thanks again!

I have BB and absolutely love it when it's clean. As mentioned before, I'd definitely get a professional detail and a coating applied - Cquartz finest is a great option. Coatings should last 3-5 years if applied correctly, and they'll help to keep your paint looking mint.

^ Actually a good point on how long it will last. I'm just a bit "insane" when it comes to paint. Plus I'm outside of Chicago so I deal with winter and salt on the roads. In Florida you'd have it last longer. Either way, I can't recommend a coating enough. Really gives black that deep, wet look.

my car was brilliant black, and repainted to bmw sapphire black, which is very close to mythos black

brilliant black was pretty hard to maintain, but looked really good when clean, like a deep stealth black. with sapphire black, it hides swirls pretty well, and when in direct sunlight, u can see all the metallic flakes and a hint of grey in it. pretty awesome imo , esp under direct light

you would get similar results to that shine under the sun with mythos ^^^

Brilliant Black all the way here and that's what my 2018 A5 is.

Reason being - I have been a long time buyer of black cars. Nothing looks better than a freshly WAXED black car in my opinion.

Brilliant Black looks better waxed, it is also look BLACKER or almost WETTER looking than Mythos which is more of a CHARCOAL color in my opinion. Mythos reminds me of a faded black (to me at least).

This is probably why some people describe BRILLIANT as FLAT as it doesn't have the metallic flake and depth as MYTHOS - and that is exactly what I want. "FLAT" (or "NON METALLIC" in this case) paint jobs tend to look better waxed than metallic (to me) and it is this same reason that they also look dirtier than metallic when not cleaned - they show their surface more than opposed to the depth of the paint job.

If you like metallic flake, depth and not washing your car - get MYTHOS. If you want a TRULY BLACK paint job that will show everything, but look stunning when waxed - get BRILLIANT.

My experience has been the darker and the "FLATTER" (non metallic) the color - the better it looks waxed. I had a silver and tan metallic paint jobs on cars and they never looked as satisfying when waxed as darker, flatter colors.
