Just polling to find out from those who live in a cold climate. My car is a 2003 1.8TQ sedan, 5 spd.
I've noticed that for most of the year when the temps are above freezing, my idle is high (around 1200rpm) on a cold start (first thing in the morning) and then settles down to normal idle (around 800rpm). But when the the temps are around freezing or lower, my idle is at normal (800rpm) on a cold start and stays there.
There's nothing wrong with my engine or anything. I just think that's kinda weird because all the non-Audi cars I had in the past starts up with higher idle and settles down no matter what the ambient temperature is. Is this unique to our cars?
Also, I notice that after the idle settles down, it seems to switch to another idle mode for a few seconds like it's under load or something and goes back to normal. Though this can only be heard from outside the car and is consistent and reapeatable.
Like I said, my car runs well so I'm not complaining - just curious as to what it's actually doing. My thinking is that it's deliberate in order to protect the engine from high idle wear on a cold day.
BTW, it's bone stock except for a stage 1 tune I did a few months ago but it did this even before the ECU flash.
