    VAG-COM Vs Ross-Tech

So, since I'm such a nice guy. I've decided to get myself a Christmas gift and what better than a scan tool. However, I'm undecided on which way to go. I thought I was going to go the VCDS route, but I came across this baby in my daily email.

I guess what I'm asking is what the general consensus is on what others prefer?

Ah, I see. I was under the impression that VAG-COM was the more general name for those scanners/cables that were cable of reading a VAG car. I stand corrected.

"Are you actually asking that question.. Just don't even post on my thread. why do I need to lie on an Audi forum about me fucking two bitches at once. (not literally) yes i did, you are late to the party.
and this thread has ran out of gas. I just wanted to tell people about my experience I had 2 nights ago and felt like sharing it with my fellow B6'ers. And I thank the people who didn't hate."

I just got the foxwell/schwaben scan tool last week. I got it because I do not have a laptop(yeah I,m a caveman). The tool is great. I can not see anything that this tool can not do. First thing I did was a throttle cleaning then an alignment with the tool. Works great. Another thing is this tool works on other makes/models. I plugged it into my 07 Ford Ranger and was able to look at live data and access vehicle modules. I am very impressed not only at what it does with Audi/VW but with any other vehicles. If you do not have a laptop and work on other vehicles this a great tool. I have been playing with this every day just to see what it can do. An excellent product.

This will not have the same functionality as the full version cable FYI.

VCDS will allow you to view any OBDII data from any make/model vehicle. It probably can't access other modules, but you could look at engine data with it as well.

I scanned through the manual that ECS puts up on their site (did you see what I did there? ), and it looked to me that you could upload the data to a computer for analysis and manipulation.

I have a cable that came with other software and has been okay for pulling CEL codes and clearing them. I think it should work with VCDS Lite and it does connect, but takes forever to do an auto scan. Maybe I'm just impatient, but after five minutes you'd think you would get something back.

If I went with Ross-Tech, I would go with the cable they sell for $299 as it works with all of our cars and it just seems to be less of a band-aid than going the generic cable and Lite route. The possible is that it's $299 and can probably get the same functionality out of the Foxwell/Schwaben scanner... For $199.

There is nothing that even comes close to genuine VCDS full version.
Its incredibly well priced for what it can do as well.

There can be no debate on this..

I'm SO glad I finally picked one up. I got it for $150 from a local forum member who traded their S4 in. Thank the heavens for Tapatalk and its forum notifications. I messaged him a split second after he posted it to our state forum haha.

^^2nd! VCDS can do some things the factory scan tool can't do. There is no equal available, comparable to the full version of VCDS. I doubt the Schwaben tool can access all the controllers on VAG cars like VCDS can.

Anyone tried the Audi tool by xtool called the Vag401? I got one on eBay, and it seems to work on mint on my B5 S4, B6 A4 and even my dads RS7. And it's only $60 on eBay when I got mine. Not sure how it stacks up against the other hardware you guys are talking about, but I've been able to do basic coding on my B5 and my buddy's MK4 GTI.
