JHM solid Throw shifter adjustment or new transmission?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been working on my sons 2004 a4-b6 1.8 T Quattro with a six speed transmission. This car has been a headache from the start. just did timing belt water pump crank bearings, thermostat, j plug, flushed heater core screwed with cooling system to get air out forever. New brakes, tires OZ racing wheels replaced wiring harness, valve cover gasket, wires, the list goes on and Now we started to have shifting problems.

At first I thought it was an adjustment issue so tried adjusting either no reverse or first and second gear was a no show. So I screwed with it for a week and gave up figuring I did not know what I was doing and needed a professional. Took it to a four ring shop they said they could not adjust it until I got a new short thro from JHM and wanted $570 to install. I said no thanks and had them flush tranny fluid and bleed slave cylinder since pedal was half way down on clutch but clutch is fairly recent.

Installed JHM a week ago have been messing with adjustment and can get reverse 3-6 but no 1st or second with car running or off.

I tried just leaving linkage loose to see if they are even close to being found and it seems like they no longer exist in the shift pattern. I checked the linkage and the bushing seems somewhat tight some up and down movement in linkage knuckle.

So today I looked at forums and made a unfortunate discovery that talks about the 1-2 shift collar being an issue on these transmissions which mean I give up and will sell the car as is not putting another $1500- $2000 into this car.

Any suggestions to identify if this is the issue or am I missing something on the shifter adjustment or something else that would stop it from getting into 1st and second gear the other gears shift fine I have watched the JHM videos more times than I care to remember.

Any suggestions to next steps would be appreciated!

If you are having trouble with the 1/2, it is entirely plausible that it is a shifter alignment issue. Have you tried removing the JHM and re-installing the OEM shifter?

I was having the same issue with the OEM shifter and they where saying it was because of the slop in the shifter that I could not get it aligned but at least I could get 1st gear and second was tough with the oem shifter but then would not be able to get reverse. If it is an alignment issue should I still be able to loosen the linkage and find all the gears without it being tight because I have tried this and it seems like there is not even a slot for 1st and second. Is it really that difficult to get the adjustment correct on the six speed?

If it is an alignment issue I am willing to give in and pay someone who know the ins and outs of these 6 speed transmissions to adjust shifter

I never had ANY luck with my JHM trio package on my 6 speed. It never went in correctly. 2nd and 3rd was pointed north east. One and two was really hard to get into... I feared the same 1-2 collar issue, but went back to OEM, and never had a issue. I assume you have the 01e as well?

Waste of money in my book for that junk.

    Yes it is the oe1.
Well that is good news that I am not the only one. I think I am pretty good with a wrench and this shifter has gotten the best of me. It sucks I wasted my money on the JHM I am going to call them and see if they will take it back it seems nicely built and probably works fine with a 5 speed since there is a little more room for error .

So it seems the next step is- I will order a rebuild kit for the OEM shifter or try to use the one I have for now and see if I can get it to work now that I have watched enough shifter adjustment videos to last a lifetime.

Good Luck with that. I called for adjustment help as well, they basically told me to take to a professional. Took it to Audi Tech thats been working on Audis longer then JHM has been in existence and he basically told me the same thing that I concluded. I honestly don't think they made the "right" one for the trans...

Try ebay for an new Shifter box... Probably cheaper then a rebuild kit.

Shouldn't be an 01E if its the original trans. It would be an O2X.

Try swapping the oil for Motul Gear 300. It did wonders for my 1-2 shifts. Also, for whatever reason, leaving the car parked in 2nd gear also helped substantially over time.

I take it you've watched the video for the final alignment? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOm9gQKFX8M

There are specific 5speed shifters and 6speed shifters.

PM me your order number and I will get in contact with you to help you resolve this issue

    You have an 01E with a 1.8T?

With the trio on the 01E, if the linkage cup isn't clearanced enough for the linkage it will bind up causing issues with adjustments. That is the number 1 cause of problems for the 01E Trio installs.

So let me clear up some confusion that I may have caused in previous posts.

I am not sure what transmission I have it is a 2004 a4 b6 1.8 T six speed but the cars VIN # does not come up as a quattro but the car is all wheel drive so not sure how to verify which transmission I have? It looks like the six speed in the video. Stabilizer bar seems tight no up and down movement.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYxAm521KuA

I purchased the JHM Short throw shifter but did not get the linkage upgrade so I do not think it is the trio mentioned earlier. I checked the linkage and there is a little up and down movement in the knuckle but does not seem enough to justify the issues I am having.

I have watched the final adjustment video but that only works if you are close on 1-2 and have reverse which I cannot get to that point.

Part number ordered -(STS-B6B7A46) - JHM Solid Short Throw Shifter 2004 and UP B6-B7 A4 (6-Speed)

    Sorry for the confusion

When I was having a similar problem on my 5 speed I ended up taking the transmission out and finding broken pivot pieces inside. Here's my thread. You can see if it's similar to yours, got some videos in there as well.

Well find out that the shifter I have does not work with the o1e trans that is in the car. So it is a useless piece of crap to me and I am going to rebuild the stock shifter and use it since I just wasted $250 and JHM says they cannot take it back because it was installed in the car even though it never actually worked in the car or was I able to drive it.

So much for customer service it is not their fault I have the wrong part but they should have offered some sort of help in swapping it out to get it to work.

So you ordered the wrong part, it didnt work, and you want JHM to take a hit on their bottom line? Not trying to be a dick, but thats what this seems like here. Since its been installed it probably is marked up so they'd have to sell it at a discount. I'm sure you can sell it on here to a member who could use it. People love that shifter trio. I wish I had one and I'd buy yours, but alas, I have a 01E.

    That is what I explained.

We cannot accept returns on used products. However selling the used product to a forum member is quick and easy.

I said it was not their fault just frustrated I will try to sell it on forum. You are correct when I took it out it was marked up so I understand why they cant take it back.

Thanks for trying to help Jake
