I have been working on my sons 2004 a4-b6 1.8 T Quattro with a six speed transmission. This car has been a headache from the start. just did timing belt water pump crank bearings, thermostat, j plug, flushed heater core screwed with cooling system to get air out forever. New brakes, tires OZ racing wheels replaced wiring harness, valve cover gasket, wires, the list goes on and Now we started to have shifting problems.
At first I thought it was an adjustment issue so tried adjusting either no reverse or first and second gear was a no show. So I screwed with it for a week and gave up figuring I did not know what I was doing and needed a professional. Took it to a four ring shop they said they could not adjust it until I got a new short thro from JHM and wanted $570 to install. I said no thanks and had them flush tranny fluid and bleed slave cylinder since pedal was half way down on clutch but clutch is fairly recent.
Installed JHM a week ago have been messing with adjustment and can get reverse 3-6 but no 1st or second with car running or off.
I tried just leaving linkage loose to see if they are even close to being found and it seems like they no longer exist in the shift pattern. I checked the linkage and the bushing seems somewhat tight some up and down movement in linkage knuckle.
So today I looked at forums and made a unfortunate discovery that talks about the 1-2 shift collar being an issue on these transmissions which mean I give up and will sell the car as is not putting another $1500- $2000 into this car.
Any suggestions to identify if this is the issue or am I missing something on the shifter adjustment or something else that would stop it from getting into 1st and second gear the other gears shift fine I have watched the JHM videos more times than I care to remember.
Any suggestions to next steps would be appreciated!
