2017 Q7, wait for the TDI or Order the gas now

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
We're going to need to replace the minivan this year. We've always had our eyes on the Q7 TDI as her next car. Now with the scandal, things are delayed a bit. The premium for the TDI is about $4K, but based on our driving pattern it's worth it to get almost double the mileage of gas on highway road trips. I don't really have a clear line of sight into when the TDI's will be available. . . .and the EPA estimates are not out yet. . . . I'm basically torn now between buying the gas or wait as long as I can for the TDI. Any thoughts from you guys on the timing of the TDI lift of the rationalization between the two?

TDI is tentatively scheduled to be released for March-May 2016 providing the current "fix" is approved. If you want the TDI wait, if you want a really good deal buy a new 2015 TDI once the stop-sale is lifted.

TDi over the gas for sure especially with that big vehicle. 725 miles on one tank on a road trip with that big a vehicle is awesome. Love the low rpm torque.

I heard late summer/fall at the earliest for the TDI.

Anyone's guess right now though - I plan to wait as long as I can to snag the diesel. S4 lease is up on 10/7 and our new house is being closed on 9/30.

Would be nice to get the Q7 TDI deal done before the house though.....

Just from a financial picture perspective, you want the car to come after you close on the house. . .even if you have to go month to month to extend your lease a few months.

Yes, I may do just that.

I need to call my bank really, we already locked the mortgage rate and did all of the paperwork so it may not matter as we have nothing else to do until 9/30.

indeed, seems every sales person, gm, regional rep etc all have different time frames and our thoughts are just guesses at this point. i am not rushing out to buy the new Q7 yet so it doesn't matter to me, i think i am going to revisit it once the s-line package is available or black optic or even wait for face lift to see if the exterior improves.

I test drove the gas version last night. For reference, I have a 2009 Q7 TDI and a 2015 Cayenne Diesel. It's hard to lend any significance to the engine when the interior takes your breath away. The technology and displays are insane. The one I test drove also had the air adaptive suspension and that too was fun to play with. The gas engine lacks the instant torque of the diesel. When I asked about mileage estimates, I was told 19/24. I think we get around 24/30 with both diesels. So there is a sacrifice both with low end power and gas mileage. We also drive a lot, like 20k miles a year, so the longevity of the diesel and the mileage will make a significant difference for our family. I was surprised that the loaded version I drove - it was a prestige with just about every option and was stickered at $87k - did not offer a black optics package. That car needs a more sinister look for those that want it but may not fit the soccer mom profile. I am used to the massage seats from my S6 but they are a welcome addition to the Q7. Nice SUV. If the EPA and VW screw those of us with the 3.0 TDI by significantly detuning it, I'll be selling the Cayenne and waiting for the revamped diesel Q7.

sadly these options are not available in the US at this time and my theory is it will be offered on the SQ7 so they don't want Q7 driving around looking like SQ7 when there will be a $20k premium tacked onto the SQ7.

I was in the same boat and was thinking of waiting for the TDI to be available in the US. I have a lease on a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder that is up in April. The Nissan has been nothing but a headache but that is another story. I was planning on placing an order for a gas model 2017 Q7 which would have arrived around the time the lease on the Nissan was up. I ended up purchasing an Orca Black Premium Plus with cold weather and tow package last Friday. I love the new car and have been amazed by the technology it has.

Anyway, I saw in Car and Driver today that the TDI is on a permanent hold. Audi is planning on putting all development into the e-tron and h-tron versions of the Q7 which should arrive by 2018. I think if this article is correct, the diesel is going to be a very long wait.

I heard they were planning on using the gas turbo 4 if the e-tron comes to the US.

first time i saw any of that... it has always been a diesel/hybrid but i guess maybe the issues made them go the other way. no idea.

You and me both. I know for a fact that this new gen Q7 won't go more than 30 months max before a Facelift. More so with the virtually confirmed SQ7 due for launch in 2017 at The Frankfurt Motorshow.
Plus I'm sure there'll be some minor updates and increased option choices too over the next 18 months. Added with that in still very badly with my current she-beast.
Plus in the realm of technology, being an early adopter is never a long-lived joy. Be it a car, a phone or an XBox! riddled with bugs. So no rush for me either!
