04 A4 TIP capabilities and turbo upgrade questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I am fairly new to the Audi scene, been reading like a mother on here, but looking for a little bit of clarification on a couple things before I drop some money on parts. I have an 04 A4 1.8T with the 5 speed Auto Tiptronic trans.

    1) What kind of HP can a stock 5 sp TIP handle? I will be replacing all the fluids in tranny, and all diffs. (is there a tranny filter I should replace?). 150K on the trans. as far as I know its original. Will it have any problems with a Stage 1+, or a K04/injectors stage 2? I already have full cat back, 3" test pipe, and stock air box with K&N drop in filter. I was looking at either 386cc TT injectors, or 550cc Bosch injectors. Will it shift find, an perform fine? Or will I need to worry, or any upgrades needed?

    2) I've read into some TCM tuning. Some say Stage 1 & 2 are available. Claimed raised rev limiter (which ECU tune does as well?) and quicker revs, and quicker shifts). I know this is a common on the new DSG's, but does TCM tuning actually make a difference in these version of transmissions?

    3) If I go with 386cc/550cc injectors, and a K04. will I need anything else? Already have Magnaflow 16601 cat back, 3" test pipe, new coils/plugs, and a stock airbox with K&N drop in filter. Will be getting ECU tuning obviously. Will I be okay, intercooler wise with my stock one? I am in Northern ontario, so I dont get crazy warm weather. But summers still see + 20-30 Celsius some days. Do turbo inlet pipes and bigger MAF's only come into play when going bigger than K04?

    4) After K04, whats the next size up to go to for turbo upgrade? As I also considering that. Would that be the FL21 frankenturbo? What all would be needed to do this, over the K04 upgrade? If I did this, I will be doing a BEX DSMIC setup, not FMIC. I get Audi parts @ cost, so I can do it somewhat cost effective. Cheaper than a FMIC, and I like the idea of hidden IC much better.

    Thanks for any insight folks!

Judging by what google has to say, the 5hp19fla is rather tough. It's been used in a ton of vehicles including the All-road 4.2 and the B5 S4. Not to say they aren't prone to other reliability issues. I would think you'd hit the limits of the stock 1.8t bottom end before the transmission.

I'll first state that some other people will have more/better info than I have, so take this with some salt.

    1) I don't know too much about the transmission capabilities of the TIP, I just know that it's the CVT that can't handle anything over the factory power. If I were to guess, I would assume that you should be fine for the power you're going to get out of the upgrades you're speaking of. (I'll speak on the injector thing in another number)

    2) I didn't have an auto trans so I truly can't speak on this topic.

    3) Most are going to suggest getting a Front Mount Intercooler with any larger turbo. But if you don't have the cash at the time, the factory side-mount will get you going, but may suffer from some heatsoak if you drive hard/track the car at all. I don't know how well the DSMIC kits run, but may or may not work for the application you're going for. I would suggest speaking with the company as they know best the capabilities of their product. TIP's are usually an afterthought for most, as the factory one can handle quite a bit. As for the MAF, don't even worry about this one with what you're looking at. My mods (Signature) ran a factory MAF and there were never any issues. My tuner even stated that it takes a bit to run out the capability of the factory MAF with those mods.

    4) If I remember, the next turbo most go to after the K04 is to the FrankenTurbo F21L and then to the big hitters, GT28's, GTX series turbos, etc. (These are all over this site, with many BAT builds). The FrankenTurbo upgrade utilizes the same upgrades as the K04 so you wouldn't need to do much more than potentially a new exhaust manifold just to really get everything out of it. FrankenTurbo usually sells kits around this time of year for killer deals (I got my turbo, exhaust manifold, 550cc injectors, new slightly larger TIP, and hardware for around $1100 shipped pretty much two years ago this month). To wrap back around to your injector question, I would suggest the 550's if you go with FrankenTurbo, and 386 TT's if you go with the K04. No true reason behind my statement other than what everyone runs on here. These turbo/injector combos work well together, no need to change what isn't broken.

Basically it comes down to what you're looking for and how/where you drive. If you do a lot of city driving and want a lot of pep, go with the FrankenTurbo/K04. If you want a fair amount of lag but huge top-end in the country, go GT28. Ultimately, your decision my friend.

All-in-all, have fun with the modding, and good luck!

The 5 speed TIP is a very underrated tranny. I've had a GTRS with all the goodies on my wife's 2003 A4 tip Quattro since 2006 to present. No problems with the tranny (original tip tranny). It still shifts like it was new. Make sure you don't do any brake launches and replace the oil and filter every 75,000 or so miles. And yes I still do enjoy driving the car every once and a while.

Did you get any TIP tuning done? Upgraded TCM tuning? But this is what I like to hear!

No upgraded TCM. The car is driven mostly in the "S" mode. The shift pattern in this mode isn't too bad with the way the GTRS turbo spools.

For a car that's almost 13 years old, it can still hold its own power (GTRS) and handling wise (stock sports suspension), against many newer cars on the street today. This is why we've kept the car for so long.

the GTRS is the ATP GTRS eliminator turbo and is somewhere between the GT28r and GT28rs. This is a great street turbo that uses the stock manifold with not too much lag on the bottom end and a decent top end when you open up the exhaust (tp --> dp)

Thank you for that link! Made me really want a GT2X, as it has decently low spool up rpm's. As I do mostly highway/city mix driving. So I dont want a ton of Lag. If not a K04 will do the trick.

Anyone know if 410cc OEM RS6 injectors will worth with a GT2x? I know they are more than enough than a K04, but will they work for a GT2x?

GT2X retains stock intake & exhaust manifold, correct? Will my stock MAF work? but an upgraded TIP is neccesary?
