    Gearbox malfunction, limited use?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok my question is what does this mean?
This past Saturday my son and I were doing a couple errands and I had this go off about 8 times. Popped up on the cluster and went away. It didn't do it again till yesterday on my way home. It did it about 5 times.
I'm getting my 35k mile service done tomorrow, so part of that will be the DSG fluid and filter change. Anything I should know to tell the dealer. The car still seems to drive normal, shift normal so I'm not really sure what is up.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Bill

Im not totally sure, but there may be a tsb with an svm update for this. Just describe the symptoms to your service advisor and they should take care of it.

I just had this happen a few months back. There's a sensor in the PRND shift selector that went bad and needed to be replaced. Its accessed from under the car so they should not be digging through your interior. Good new is that it stores a code so they should be able to find exactly whats wrong.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

Isn't this usually the first sign that the mechatronics unit is going bad?

Initially that was my thought because I was told that clearing the codes should resolve the issue. After clearing and readapting the sensors the problem returned. At that point they replaced the sensor and it has not returned. In my case I had noticed a few time before that when I would put the car in park and turned it off if I opened the door or tried restarting the car I would get prompted to put the car in Park - at which point I needed to shove the lever so that the sensor closed the circuit.

ya this sounds exactly like the mech unit is going, same symptoms I had. Hopefully your not TD1'd, otherwise they won't fix it for you under TSB.

From your mods, if that off chance you are, this worked great! Don't really notice how broken it is since it's so slowly digressing.

Ours just did this after our 75k (with DSG service) and it was in the shop for three weeks, a temp sensor (that needs the trans disassembled all the way) to replace the part. Hope your are under warranty.

I'm guessing it's the mech unit. The same exact thing happened to me and the dealer swapped the unit. After the swap I didn't see the issue for about a year until it popped up again 2 months ago. The dealer went ahead and replaced entire DSG tranny for me after that :D...they had my car for a month!

My car is a 2012, when I dropped it off at the dealer tonight the service advisor said they would do the 35k mile service and look into the issue. He told me if it was determined to be a issue from abuse that it wouldn't be covered. He also asked me if my car was ( chipped ) I said no. I know I answered him falsely just because he used the wrong term. Chipped, no... I didn't tell him that it had a ( tune ) I did put the stock tune back in it yesterday. So right now it's not tuned. And it was never chipped.. Do people even replace chips in the ECM'S anymore?
So did I lie to him, not really because he asked the wrong question. Will he be able to tell, probably so he will most likely void my warranty and Audi care.
I'll most likely find out something tomorrow.

Ok, I picked my car back up at the dealer last night from having the 35k mile service done.
I had them look into the gearbox malfunction light, code that I have had coming on a few times now.
First they completed the 35k mile sevice under my Audi care, no charge.
Second, they started scaning the car to see what was up with the fault light coming on. They stopped diagnosis after about a half hour as the technician noted Extensive after market modifications.
What the notes say on my paperwork are Performed scan tool operation and found faults for Excessive clutch temperature inside transmission. Faults appear to be Sporadic.
So as of now he said my car is not TD1 but he would involve Audi if I wanted to try to have them go further and have them make the call as far as it being under warranty or not.
So I just took it back and and paid the half hour labor out of pocket to avoid my car from being TD1. We will see how it acts and go from there.

I had the same error code come up on mine - well the same error code description. It is a known issue apparently and requires the circuit board to be fixed on the mech unit. Audi sell replacement / fix kits for it.

Maybe there is another Audi dealer in New England that is mod friendly that I could go to?
I'm going to be working with a top tuner very soon that has shown interest in doing a nitrous tune for my car. I just need to make sure my car is good before putting more power to it.

ahh gotcha well that makes more sense - very interesting. I don't think that ecs boost tap talk is fair at all but the rest makes sense. I'd say none of the dealers are "mod friendly" but i'm sure some are, i've never found em. I'd roll the dice at this point and see what AoA says. I'm sure they can prove the ecu tune requested to much hp / tq for the tranny but who knows.

You have a Revo tune so you need to go to the Revo dealer to have it flashed back to true stock before you go to any ANY Audi dealer. Your SPS will only take it to a stock-like level of performance but they can still see that it is flashed.

If you have one of the early Revo supercharger pulleys that is silver then newspaper and tape the area off and spray some black plastidip or black paint on it so you can smile and say "no it's factory..."

Actually I bought my car already modded. When I bought it down in Virginia I was told that all the work done to the car was done at a authorized Audi shop and it still had a full warranty with audi care.
Yes I've done a few things to the car since then but mostly cosmetics.
So am I trying to scam warranty work? No, not at all. I was told by the Dealership that I bought the car from that warranty was still all good.
As far as the pulley it is black, so maybe they measured it.

It probably hadn't had any service or warranty work done after it was Revo flashed so it hadn't yet been TD1 labeled. It also took Audi a while to crack down on ECU flashes so who knows.

Definitely take it to a Revo dealer and have it flashed back to true stock.

Remove the boost tap just to save yourself any headache.

If your car is flashed and has a pulley on it, then you will receive a TD1 code the moment your car is scanned. If you want your gearbox malfunction problem diagnosed, you will have to remove the pulley and flash. As far as the boost tap, you landed on a tech thats a fucking clown. Probably an old timer that doesn't know what they're looking at. There is a harness that fails intermittently in the transmission, the whole transmission has to be split apart and disassembled to replace it, so if it is that problem I suggest you make your car a bit more stock and get it taken care of.

With everyones knowledge here, is there any chance that this issue will not come back because of the fluid and filter change that was just done to the DSG?
I thought I read somewhere while searching about the issue that sometimes it was contributed to dirty fluid or a clogging filter. I know the dealership just changed all that and the fault code, light has only come on 2 different days. Maybe caught it in time, or no such luck?

Due to it being any number of possible problems it is hard to say. Only way to know is drive it and see.

Well a little update. The fault, light, message came up again yesterday about 4 times in about 3 minutes. Then nothing after that.
I guess I will have to call the dealership down in Virginia where I bought this car.
From the receipts they gave me all this work was done when the car was new.
I looked at the service history on carfax and it was serviced at Audi a few time after the mods were done to the car.
It had the Thermostat changed and other things done to it under warranty just before I bought it.
Why no issue then about warranty?
I'm actually on the fence about just trading it in and getting something different.
On the fence I say because I really like the car but I don't want to deal with the issues when I was told from the dealership that I bought my car from that everything that was done to the car was performed at an authorized Audi shop and that it was still under factory warranty and had Audicare.
I don't have the cash available to have the transmission fixed out of pocket.
So I guess Trading it in and moving on may be my best bet.
But, I really enjoy this car and it pisses me off that I was lied to in Virginia.
I'm lost in thought right now.

I'm going to give them a call and see what if anything can be done.
They were asking 45k for it, I ended up getting it for 40k
I paid that much only because of the amount of money that was spent on the mods and for them reassuring me that it was still under full warranty with all that done.
I really don't want to get rid of it, so I will see what they will do.
    Thanks, Bill

If they said it was still under warranty then they either lied or could it be a non Audi warranty?

Did you get anything on writing?
