Well that didnt take long (rashed wheel)

Wife was driving the other night almost home, driver in center lane went to go dodge a dog and came into the wifes lane and forced the wife into the curb. The other driver didn't stop and just kept on driving. My wife was in tears when she called me and sick to her stomach as she knew how expensive these wheels are on the SQ5 for the 21" wheels. I felt bad for her because I told her if she tore these wheels up like her previous car I was going to get her a 1990's Honda Civic to drive.

She got about a 1/3rd of the edge of the rim on the front passenger side wheel. Didn't bend the wheel or the lip, thankfully the tire rim guard protected the wheel some. Lightly scuffed the edge of the rim, I sanded it down for now. Wheels goes down to Dallas tomorrow to see if the lip can be repaired and machined down to match again. That will only cost $150, if it doesn't work already priced a new wheel for $1150 out the door for the local dealer.

Which leads me to my next issue, found a couple of wheels for sale on Ebay and on the Audi forums. Some of these guys are asking $1500+ for a used wheel when retail is only $1040 before tax. I guess there is a sucker out there somewhere for them, no way I am paying $1500 for a used wheel, best I would offer on a used wheel is $600 bucks before I just buy a new one.

We should have the wheel back by Friday and in time for the weekend, not exactly how I wanted to break in the new SQ5 before we even made the 1st payment.

Hopefully the wheel repair place and salvage it, closing on the house in 3 months so this is not something we were wanting to have to spend money on right now. We have a vacation coming up, trying to get things paid down and money put aside for moving expenses and such. Not a major deal though, wife is ok and car is fine other than the cosmetics of the wheel.

Good luck with everything. Life happens - not like your Mrs. was yaba-yaba-ing with girlfriends while parallel parking. Glad she's safe. And as a dog lover, I can't grumble at the guy in the other lane. Fingers crossed for the repair. If not... FWIW - always worth checking the classifieds and even CL as well...also calling around a motorsports shop or two. Seems like there's always a complete set of take-off 21's on sale somewhere, including a set here recently for less than $2k....all four wheels and tires. For that matter, if you do wish to go new OEM, Audi San Diego (audipartsdirect.com) is a great resource and their pricing is very fair. Again...good luck.

(All four wheels on my wife's '07 Lexus are curbed to hell and back. I paid for one repair (flawless), but gave up after that. I don't think it even took 'til the third tire rotation for all four of 'em to be munched. Sigh.)

Yeah Vroom the ole wheel curbing was a running joke between us for some time as she got 3 out of the 4 on her last car. They were chrome clad though and couldn't be repaired, at $1400 a pop I wasn't replacing them either. So that is one up for an aluminum wheel that we can at least attempt a repair. As far the dog goes I am a huge dog lover as well, I am not going to armchair QB what could have done after the fact. To many variables and not one person knows how they would handle it. Either way it would have cost me money, if the dog would have been hit I am sure she would have rushed it to the vet even though it is not ours.

I found I great local guy in Maryland who turned the face of the wheel on a lathe and clear coated the wheel for $130. It looks like brand new.

Thank you sir, that helps for sure. I doubt I would sell it, just keep it on hand in case one every gets damaged beyond repair.

first, sorry to hear about your situation. and fortunately, the oncoming car didn't go head on into her!

i think the auctions that are going for $1500 are for sets of 4, not individual. folks have been selling sets of 4 with tires for around $1750-2000 in the classifieds here. that really doesn't help your situation since you only need 1, but gives you an idea of how much they "should" cost.

Yeah I noticed that now on the one ad I found, it wasn't worded very well but the pictures show all 4 wheels. Now the wait begins, wheel left today down to Dallas. Hopefully find out tomorrow if it was able to be repaired or not.

All back from the repair shop, they actually did a really good job. If you didn't know the wheel was damaged you would never notice it, the clear coat is slightly off from the factory but we can live with that for now.

Here are the before and after pics....

EXCELLENT! Color and clearcoat matching is a real pain, but it sure looks like they did a wonderful job. Great to hear.

Probably obvious, but in re-reading my post, I did mean to align Audio San Diego with genuineaudiparts, not that other site I mistakenly typed. Not sure what Freud would make of that, but since it's now a complete non-issue, I'll move on to my next screw-up.

Congrats again - glad this one turned out happy.

Yeah believe me, she was super happy that we were able to salvage the wheel. Was quoted $150, kid went to charge me $125 and the manager that I always deal with at Discount tire took over and charged me $100 flat. I was ecstatic to say the least.
