Opinions on Value

Hi Members, Happy Holidays. I am a long time member, but really just a lurker reading posts vs. contributing. I will be getting a new car in Feb, which means I will have to sell my current daily driver, a 2010 S4 Sprint Blue. Just curious what the value might be as it has very high mileage. I live in Toronto and commute into Hamilton every day for work, so its all highway mileage. Some basic details of the vehicle:

- currently has 230,000 kms
- 2010 base model, NO navigation or back up cameras
- car has only been serviced at dealership (Hamilton Audi/VW dealership), never missed a service
- has set of winter tires on rims
- automatic
- no modifications

autotrader has them a low as $20K, but the mileage isn't what mine is at. so I wonder how much of a factor that is. feel free to ask any questions that may help in determining the value.

The value will depend if you are considering trade-in value, wholesale, or retail. I know that seems a bit obvious, but trade-in isn't anywhere near wholesale value, as I found out on a trade-in of the wife's car.

The good thing about trade-in value is that it reduces the purchase price of your new car before taxes. So you save some money on taxes. But they generally hose you on the value for the convenience of getting rid of the car then and there.

There are a couple of websites that you can look up this stuff: www.canadianblackbook.com and www.vmrcanada.com. Depending on how much you trust the info on a random free-access website. I wish I had a login to the Canadian blue book site.

I looked at the trade-in value of a base S4. My jaw dropped. Assuming it's anywhere near accurate (it was close on what the wife's car was valued at).

Hard to tell with those sites. When I traded my car in, I think it was saying something like 6500$ trade in 8 K sale, but traded it in at ~10 gs, (they were going for around 11-12 K on auto trader). What Km's were the ones on auto trader? selling a 230 km 5 year old car may be hard is another issue. I feel your pain tho, I do a similar commute but I head west on the QEW towards hamilton :)

BenMTL - Yes, Gas is brutal, AND also 407 toll charges. double whammy.

Jogee - Thanks for the insight. I am buying a car off lease from a family member. I didn't consider trading in my car to the dealership. like you said they probably wouldn't give me much for the convenience. I'm not in a rush to sell the audi, I don't need to sell it in order to pay for the new one. so I'd probably just try to sell through autotrader. I will look at those sites you posted though. thanks!

Szaer - the car on autotrader asking $20K had close to 190K kms I think, but was also fully loaded.

imo - it will depend on the condition of the car, whether it looks like it has 230k on it or whether it looks like it has half of that will be a huge factor. I'm guessing list for 18 and settle for 16.5.

Szaer: don't know if I should post this in an Audi forum, but I'm going back to bmw. Years ago I had a bmw 335, when the lease was up on that, I switched to my current s4, which I ended up buying out because of the mileage. Now in February, I'll be buying out someone's bmw 650 gran coupe...

The $20k sounds about right for the mileage. Doing a quick check around my area too. IMO, try the $19.9k and go from there, I bet you will still get a few calls

Good luck with the sale. The thing you have going for you is that it is all HWY Mileage. I'd say 20k (like some other posters recommended) would be a good starting basis.
