How to separate the glove box lid microlift from the box itself?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm sure this has been covered numerous times, seeing how every B6 owner suffers glove box lid / hinge problems, but I couldn't come up with the right search query to find the answer to my question. Which is: I have removed the glove box from the car, but how do I detach the lid microlift from the box? I mean the piston in a cylinder thing that's supposed to make the lid open smoothly, but mine got completely stuck and requires so much force to move that the hinge on the lid breaks. I literally don't see any way to detach the cylinder, although I know for sure this part is replaceable.
I hope that description makes sense, I don't know the correct names for these parts, sorry.

And while we're at it, assuming I do manage to detach the thing with your help, is there a quick and dirty way to make it unstuck without buying a new one? It's OK if the lift doesn't work smoothly and the lid just falls out once unlocked. I just want to be able to open and close the lid easily.

To make it move much more freely so it puts less stress on a hinge during operation, you could lube inside the cylinder and/or drill a small hole at the very bottom of cylinder. Some reported success with just one of these methods. As far as detaching cylinder from glovebox, all you have to do is rotate it and then just pull it off. In a picture above that you've posted, you could see that, for the lack of a better word, clip which holds cylinder in place.

So it's just a lock, I'll be able to freely pull the cylinder out once I rotate it into the right position? Thought I did try rotating it as much as it would go, but apparently not. Gonna follow your advice when I get home.
    Thanks a lot.

IIRC you might have to have the glove box lid open when rotating to remove it, but once you remove the little plastic pin it just rotates and comes out, I pulled the plunger apart and removed the rubber o ring in there so the door kind of falls open still but this way people don't pull on the slow moving door and break the hinge.

Thanks. Great tip with the O-ring.
I have already detached the lid, so that won't be a problem.

I was able to separate this part from the box very easily with your advice. I have then had a bit of trouble pulling the piston out (was afraid I'd break it, it was that much stuck). But once I've pulled it out and inserted back, it started moving perfectly smoothly all the way even with no additional lubrication! So if anyone who has the same problem as I did is reading this - don't hurry to order the replacement hinge just yet.
