Right? Help me understand the H rating...does it mean can't ever cruise at 120mph even for few minutes at a time? Or is it more that you should not exceed 90mph for extended periods, and if so what is extended, five minutes or a half hour? And what happens if you break the rules...catastrophic failure, blowout, or worse?

Sorry to hijack thread, do appreciate the Hakka Holiday wishes and always love a photo of Audi in the snow!

I know, right? What loser would never intend to drive faster that 100mph for extended periods on snow tires?

My post wasn't meant to be offensive.

It's nice to be able to do a quick blast during the colder months. Obviously, not when there is snow but just cold temps. I have a set of season old LM-32's with the factory peelers that are just sitting in my basement. They are imo a very good winter performance tire. I drove on them through all the snow storms we had here in the metro NY area. They were stellar in both wet and dry as well as snow and ice.

I want snow. Instead it's in the 60's up here in the NE. You're lucky.

The R2's have a speed rating of R which is 106mph. Same as blizzaks. I'm pretty sure most studdless ice and snow tires have the same rating... they are not high speed/high performance dry weather tires... obviously...

You can exceed that speed but just not for extended periods... the tire will not explode if you do, it's just not intended for that higher speed, won't handle the heat as well (winter this may be less of a factor) - aka become softer and less stable... and won't be as stable as a tire with higher speed rating... it's more of a comparison rating to see how stable a tire is... a higher speed rating tire will also handle better at lower speeds than a lower speed rated tire.

It's a snow tire after all...

That's cool and all, but where in the *US* do you guys get to stay above 106mph for more than a minute or two? Being serious here. Every time I (hypothetically speaking, of course) creep up to 120 or more, it (hypothetically) wouldn't be sustainable for more than a minute or two, given the law-abiding citizens, or braindead drivers that would (hypothetically) be in the way----and/or the crappy, pothole laden, uneven, mixed media roads.

Looks like the WS70's (which I believe replaced the WS60) and WS80's are higher rated at H (130) or T (118)...

Winter tires can go all the way to V rated (149mph rated).

As with any product, ratings/limits are placed to provide an operating limit for users to adhere to. There's extensive testing involved to set these limits (including some safety factors), but you cannot test a product in every condition.

All tires will lead to catastrophic failure (blowout) with too much speed, but the exact speed is not clear, as there are so many variables to consider (temperatures, loads, inflation pressure, etc...). R rated tires are tested to run at 106 mph loaded with proper pressures. Running over this will not guarantee a failure, but the chances increases especially if the weather is warm and the vehicle is fully loaded with underinflated tires. A Y rated tire can run at higher speeds given the same conditions.

Either way, this normally isn't an issue outside of Germany, where 100mph+ speeds for extended times can be driven. If you get in an accident in Germany running your car higher than the tire's speed rating, you will most likely not get insurance to cover the accident.

In short, if you buy tires for better winter capability, don't run them higher than the speed rating. You don't know how sensitive the tire is to conditions outside it's rated limits. That's why there are performance winter tires.

No worries - my comment was more in response to this statement:

"You can exceed that speed but just not for extended periods... the tire will not explode if you do, it's just not intended for that higher speed"

Tires do have catastrophic failures driving over their intended speed rating, especially if subjected to poor conditions of high load, high heat and under inflation. It happens everyday. Materials/layers in the tire can break down really fast when too much heat is created (and the tire is not designed for it). It's best not to push the luck and drive over the speed rating of the tire, as all tires are different and will degrade differently when pushed over the limits.

The Hakkas spent extended periods over 90 on the way down from the mountains (in Mexico) last night. Can report there were no "catastrophic failures".

I have r2s, I have always kept the cruise control to 79 and tried not to go over 80, as I put a safety factor to the 106 mph

After this thread, seems like I might increase that up to 90
