Question Finding a replacement 4.2 with good cylinder walls

were do people find good 4.2's??? i know car-part.com and shokan sell them and sometimes on the classified section theres a decent engine kicking around but otherwise i think they're hard to come by. i looked at a 4.2 long block today that was pulled from car that had timing failure. i scoped it myself and found scoring on the walls . my buddies are trying to convince me to do a 2.7tt swap but i like the 4.2 too much to move on. plus i have a b5 avant in my stable so i'd rather not.

has anyone purchased from car-part or shoken and had issues?? if so how did you resolve it with them? i don't want to spend $1500-2500 on a replacement only to have the same exact issue i already have.

Finding a replacement 4.2 with good cylinder walls

I ordered one off of a car-part listed re-ferb place. It's was fine.. Don't know where you are getting that number though, unless you are looking at short blocks. Plan to spend closer to $4k for a decent block with low-ish miles. It took me a while to find one too.. Like 2 months of calling around and search sites. Check eBay too. Good luck!

Yeah I'm betting he will most likely part the avant out--he already has an s4 that is done top to bottom...

BTW what happened to your engine?

well when i purchased it last year it was doing OK, wasn't burning too much oil compared to my first b6 s4 i owned. did a compression test and numbers were also OK but with a few lower than others. i know my valve seals are bad and possibly valve guides. i also put a camera in the cylinders and saw some scoring on a few cylinders but not all. took the car on a few 1K mile road trips and then it was down hill from there. it burns over a quart of oil if i go for a spirited run with friends and blows smoke on hard pulls in high rpm. also blows smoke when i take off from a stop... pretty depressing if i may say so but i love the sounds and torque of the 4.2 otherwise i'd sell for a B5 2.7 but its also a Nogaro and i love the B6 body lines. its the definition of a love/hate relationship

I think Sandspeed just pulled his 4.2 and did the 2.7 swap.

It's not out yet, but could be soon. I'm about to scope it in the next few days to check for scoring. I just want to have all the info I can get when I sell it.
