I took a video, after my car was all warmed up.

Not sure if its the lifters that I hear. But the car has 149k. And my mechanic said the chains have been done.

Sounds normal. However, the bone crunching teeth grinding, asshole puckering cold-start rattle is your nemesis.

I have rattle on cold start. Its like 1 second maybe 2. But I hear that is normal.

Can these engines go over 200k? Does anyone have living proof??

Over 200k stock? Or with timing components changed?

Well. I bought this thing for 5k about 3 months ago.

Had my good friend who is a BMW MASTER tech do the VCG, flywheel, clutch, rear main seal, coolant expansion tank, coolant temp sensor... ANYWAYS

While doing the VCG he said he looked at the chains. And they looked REALLY "Metal like." He said if it was original it would have a yellow-ISH look to it, especially having 149k... (meaning the chains have been serviced/replaced)

So, with that said. Is 200k realistic on this car?

The car could go 300k if you maintain it and drive it right. Just the color of the chains isn't an exact tell if the chains have been done. I would guess that they probably have...but who knows. Either way...5k is a good price

My 04 had the same sound and it is your alternator belt tensioner going out. Replace the tensioner and belt ASAP and be ready to spend about a grand as the whole front end has to come off to do he job.

Just service position is needed, not a front end removal.

Sorry I was there when the job was done and don't know how you would get away doing it in the service position. The front end has to be removed to do the belt alone, was there for that one as well

not on my B6, service position was all that was needed. Maybe when you say the whole front end, you really mean the bumper? cuz the bumper has to come off to get it into service position.

And what are you even talking about here. There's no sound in that video that indicates any of what you just said. And no the front end doesn't need to come off. Service position. A guy with small hands possibly even less.

i have average hands and service position was all that was needed to change the belt out. I was surprised at how easy it was. yeah its a pita whenever you have to do anything on the engine, but its still doable and something we bought into when purchasing the car lol OP--take a better video so we can hear what you are hearing plz...

I'm going to try and take a better video. I was in the McDonald's drive thru last night, and the ticking sounded so loud off of the brick walls. Someone mentioned it could be the belt tensioner / alternator? I was thinking of also doing the oil check valves!!!

Here’s what an idler pulley and tensioner sounds like when it has failed. This was my car.
    Before;

After; (The clicking is the valve train - standard in these and the mic accentuates it.)

Pull the bumper off. Undo the relevant screws etc - great instructions at the end of this PDF by ECS - http://bd8ba3c866c8cbc330ab-7b26c6f3...llation_R1.pdf
Sit your Rad on a 20ltr bucket after you’ve pulled the assembly forward off your snub mount (change that out whilst you’re at it) and go for it. Straight forward and very easy DIY.

Ok. I finally got a chance to take another video of my rattle. Hopefully just the tensioner/belt.
