I really like this one, but also afraid the engine is going bad. Add to that, there are like 4-5 “mechanic specials” in our local craigslist, make thoughts of buying worse.IMG_5894.JPG

Wish I had found this thread before I traded my Jetta in last week on this 2014 A4 with 68k miles on it...I'm stuck with the halogen headlights and will immediately start looking at the most affordable way to upgrade them...but overall I love driving it and the main reason I made the switch was I really, really wanted the awd...this was the only Audi in my price range and I had it down to this or a 2014 Subaru Legacy.

Call an Audi service department and give them the VIN, they should be able to tell you.

The last Audi I owned was a B6 sedan (1.8T auto Quattro). The Audi I miss is my ‘99 B5 Avant (1.8TMQ). I traded it for my ‘84 911 in ‘06.

My wife and I both currently drive Jeep Wranglers. Mine is a 2 door and my wife’s is a 4 door (JKU). I’m seriously thinking about selling my 2 door and buying her either a Q5 or A4. I’ll take over the 4 door Wrangler. She really wants an Audi (would be her first). I’m trying to decide whether she would be happier with a Q5 or a B8.5. I’ve read the entire thread (and others) and understand that I need to look for ‘13>, and preferably Premium Plus or Prestige. I’ll definitely talk to my local dealer with VIN numbers for service history on any prospective cars. Is there anything else I need to look at? Any suggestions?

    TIA,
    Mike

Cool question. First I would make sure she takes some long test drives in both. My guess is she will like the Q5 better coming from a Wrangler. Some early 2013s (Manufactured in 2012) could have the old tensioner. Also just wondering - have you also considered the A5?

Funny you should ask! After we get her in an Audi, my plan is to find one for me too. A/S5s, A/S4s and A/S3s are on my list, as well as the Q/SQ5s. I figure she’ll like the Q5 better, but you never know. I’m thinking that once we get her in one, she’ll let me drive it from time to time, and I’ll be able to decide what would work best for me. Part of me thinks a 3.0T Q5 may be perfect for me. That’s several months away though.

There’s a lady (recent college grad and married) that’s local to us that has a Q5 for sale, but is traveling until tomorrow (honeymoon, possibly). I plan on talking to her on the 26th. She said it’s always been serviced at our local dealer. She’s priced it right - if she’s followed their service recommendations. If not, that’ll be my bargaining tool. I’ll do my best to get the VIN and run a service history when I talk to her this week.

Don’t get me wrong, we love our Jeeps. We simply don’t use them like I think they should be used. We don’t “need” them like some do.

I miss the Audi Community - especially Audizine!

Hi everyone- I'm looking to get a cold air intake (closed preferably, #CI100021) for my B8.5 A4 as well as a carbon fiber engine cover (part: ? and side cover( part: ES#3570283)). So if you have a part you're willing to part with, let me know!

    Thanks!

    Hi all.
I am new here and was initially in the market for the s4 for obvious reasons but due to pricing I am considering going with an A4 with as much sport options as I can find, specially the seats as they seem to be more comfortable. Needs to be AWD of course. Not really sure what else to ask or look for, and also what to check when I go see it in person.
    Appreciate the help.

Hi fellow P-car owner. The Porsche is appreciating in value. The Wrangler is literally the least depreciating vehicle sold in the US. (Side note: the B5 Avant 1.8TMQ was an awesome car and I can understand why you miss it... the only reason my B8 2.0TMQ isn't an Avant is because only the sedans were offered in stick shift). Back to the point - expect the Audi to be NOT like your Porsche and Jeeps... that value will drop like a rock and keep dropping! If you keep vehicles for a long time, that shouldn't matter. Just enjoy it. But if you go through cars quickly, expect that enjoyment to have an overall high cost of ownership over a relatively short time frame. Good luck!

    Zach,

Thanks for this. You’re correct on all counts. The value of my 911 has increased significantly over the past 12 years (12 years, really? WOW!). The values of our Jeeps are basically the same now as when we bought them - less than 1% change.

There are a lot of factors that one to play, but the major one is my wife is ready to try Audi ownership. I tried to get her into one back in 2012, but she got cold feet. We’re looking at the same car we did back then (2.0T quattro Q5 or A4 - mainly Q5). The size is nearly perfect for us. We need space from time to time, and the Q5 has enough of that.

About longtime ownership. If we can find the right one for her, it could be. That is, if it doesn’t end up costing a fortune. We understand the maintenance costs, but the unexpected costs is what really does it for us. When it starts leaving us stranded, it’s time to go. Our daughter just completed her first semester in college (4.0 GPA, yes!), so costs need to be structured and planned for us.

Hope my rambling made sense! Thanks again for bringing the cost (buying and selling) to my attention.

    Beautiful A4, BTW!

    I found a...
    1. 2016 Ibis white with 26k miles asking price is $26,500. It is a A4 Premium Plus/S-Line.
EDIT = Dealer just sent over actual pictures as they had generic ones on website and it does NOT have s line steering wheel / seats :( **disappointing** as I thought it did since the pics on the website did have them.
From what I read on the first post, I am better off waiting for a Premium Plus + S line as it is a better option all together plus will have the nicer lights or any reason I should consider the ones below?

There is other two A4s that I am also looking at but in their carfax it shows it just being a Premium even though they have heated seats...
    2. 2016 Gray Metallic with 29k miles (Style package) - Asking $26k
    3. 2016 Gray Metallic with 20k miles (Convenience plus package) - asking $25k

I am buying for a daily driving car, needs to be good in winter weather obviously why I am going with the quattro. I also will need it to be kid friendly as I need to have a car seat in the back (hopefully the room is oK?). The other big thing for me is seat comfort as I have lower back issues so any info here for owners will be greatly appreciated.

The heated seats can/could be added to to the base model (Premium). You might try googling for the 2016 A4 sales brochure. It may you get a better ideas on features.

Of many many cars that I have tried to like - the B8 A4 seats are the most comfortable for me. I think all models (dont quote me on that) have the electric adjustable lumbar which is excellent. It moves forward and back and up and down. Not sure about back seat for car seats (no kids) but its not an especially large back seat. I had a current gen Passat and that back seat is enormous.

Thanks, are you talking about just regular leather seats on the A4 or the sport ones?
I'm looking for recommendations on the ones I found so see what I should look for as well.

If youre planning on keeping the car while I would get as many features as you can, within reason. I think from 2014 on that the s-line style package came standard.

I havent really tried the sport seats. (Just the standard ones). I dont like that bottom extension. It’s good to have an active warranty but it wouldnt be a deal breaker for me if the price was right.

Keep in mind depreciation on all B8/B8.5 is pretty bad.

I am planning on keeping the car for a while I would hope. I am still somehow still considering the s4 but I cant afford past 30k out the door.
So looking for some recommendations from you guys as you know best so if you wouldn't mind telling me what to look for etc I would appreciate it sooooo much!!
    Thanks in advance

When you say about depreciation, are you saying its not worth looking for a newer model and consider older models with low miles?

More of just a heads up so you know what youre getting into. Usually about the 3 years old mark is when the depreciation curve flattens out - but for this car and a lot of Audis it keeps nosediving.

When you ask about what to look for - what do you mean? Like features? Or mechanical inspection?

Make sure it has a good maintenance history. With a car about 3 or 4 years old the main thing is oil changes.

Test drive a couple of examples to get a feel for how the car should drive.

B8/B8.5 Buyer's Guide and "Looking to buy" Question Thread

Anyone have any info on the Q5 Prestige Hybrid? Curious if there is anything else to look for? With our price point, the mileage will be around 100k. Sure, less would be great, but... Even if it has 100k or more, as long as the maintenance is done, a 100 or 120k car may be a better deal (chains, tensioners, etc. already replaced). Anything particular about the Hybrid to look out for?

80k miles. So far already put 2500miles - canyons, twisties, gravel, and snow and it is solid as new, tight as a vault.

So I'm looking at a 2009 A4 2.0T Avant Premium Plus. It's $6200 at the dealer, super clean carfax, Solenoid replaced, Oil Consumption issues done, head gasket replaced, engine was taken out for a full service,, all service done, 2 owners, 127K miles, super well taken care of. Go for it, or run far away? It's my first audi.

Go for it, or run far away? It's my first audi.
That’s not a lot of info. I assume you mean piston rings were replaced. At what mileage? Even assuming the engine has say 40k of service free life left in it, lots of things wear out like suspension components, fuel pumps, turbo, struts, engine mounts. 2009 was the first year of the B8 so you get all the potential early run issues in full. Cam Bridge screen. PCV. Rear main seal. Injectors and on and on.

Im sure the dealer is saying it doesnt burn oil that means nothing. Even vehicles with piston ring fixes have had oil consumption come back.

If you are a DIYer it changes things somewhat, but you should have about $4000 in savings to cover potential issues. On long term average expect to spend about $1000 year on maintenance and repairs for an older Audi. A problematic Audi could easily bump that up. It’s not really a good idea to bargain shop an old Audi if youre not really familiar with the cars. And you need one or two very trustworthy local shops. No matter what you do - always get a pre purchase inspection.

The piston rings were replaced, head gasket replaced, and "full engine service" (according to carfax) was done at 76K miles.

Hello I posted this in the oil consumption forum but maybe this is the right place for it:

I am a new member and am interested in purchasing an Audi. In my car search I ended up looking at A4 Avants, 2009+. One I am considering is a 2011 A4 Avant Premium with about 86k miles. I am doing research and found out about the oil consumption issue and am concerned.
I’m not sure if the link will work but here is the CarFax for this vehicle:
    https://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistor...&partner=GAZ_0
This 2011 Avant is being sold by a dealer and has a complete Carfax showing 1 owner and service records. ItÂ’s last records show it had engine oil/fluid leak checked at an Audi dealership, then about 500 miles later at 79,756 miles shows at same Audi dealership:
    Spark plug(s) replaced
    Tire condition and pressure checked
    Engine removed to complete repair
    Engine checked
    Piston rings replaced
    Drivability/performance checked

Is this the piston rings replaced to correct oil consumption? Is it required to remove the engine to do that? Is this a red flag or a reassurance that the car has been taken care of?
My question is, is it good to have an A4 that had had this work done, or better to find one without work done or is that taking too much of a risk that it would have oil consumption issues?
I would like to contact the dealership to see if they have any more info on the work done.
I would appreciate any advice from the experts here.
Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of the community of knowledge here, I appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Carfax link doesn't work? Personally, I wouldn't probably purchase any German car with 80,000+ miles on it. What others are going to tell you on here is to contact the Audi dealer the Carfax shows it was serviced at and see if they can provide you with the vehicle's actual service history and whether the pistons were replaced at an Audi Dealer. Another option might be to purchase an aftermarket used car warranty. Buying a used B8 A4 with that kind of mileage, without knowing it's complete history, you'll definitley want to find one with the pistons already replaced. You will also want to make sure that it has had the timing chain tensioner changed to the latest revision and possibly the chains replaced as this is also the subject of a class action lawsuit and a ticking time bomb. I plan to do mine at about 45k miles.

Don't buy any 2011 or earlier B8 without documentation that the consumption fix was completed.

These data points look like stage 1 and 2 of the oil consumption fix yes. Generally speaking that fix solves the issue; double check with the dealer that both stages were done but you should be safe on that front.

The remaining major concern at that mileage is the timing chain tensioner. There's a thread on it but if it fails the engine goes. It's about a $1200 repair but it is technically DIYable if you have the willpower and ability. There's also a cam gear or something that fails and can be proactively addressed while you're in there; @lambda13 is a victim of that and can provide more details.

The other general B8 issues are documented in the opening post of this thread; if you're comfortable with those and plan to stay on top of maintenance and German car-priced repairs B8s are great cars and true wagons are only getting rarer. Good luck with it if you decide to move forward.

Looking at 2012 a4 avant premium plus- S line. Glacier white 75k mi, original owner, full service records from audi. It did have the turbo replaced 1k mi ago under goodwill warranty by audi. New tires, owner said he's had to top off the oil 3 times in 7 years. It does need front and rear brakes/rotors.
It's super clean not a scratch on it. I think I can get it for $14-14,500 k.

I've read through some of this thread, it seems for the most part 2012's are okay as far as oil/piston related stuff. Car has a build date of late 2011, so I think it was given an older turbo, hense the replacement.

    What do you guys think?

How do you guys go about finding the window sticker info?

I just purchased this one from Portland and didnt go out to see it first - Just had a large selection of high res photos and videos to work off of. I'm fairly certain the dealer listed all options quite well, but just curious if the window sticker would reveal any additional options.

There used to be a site called wikilender that worked pretty good. But it looks like Carvana bought it and now it sucks. You should be able to get all the info you want here:

I was an owner of a B7 A4 Avant but moved to a 5-series wagon because it was bigger. Well, now that I am going back to Audi (don't ask), I wanted to ask if there is an interior size difference between the '12 A4 vs the '13-'16 Allroad - specifically, the rear seats. I have two kids under 7, one is still in the car seat; the other just a booster - will it be super tight with the car seat as it was in my B7?

'12 A4 and '13-'16 A4/Allroad are all B8s and share wheelbase and dimensions. Rear seat would be the same.

I can say that over B6 the B8 has a 2+ inch difference in back seat leg room. Unsure of B7 vs B8.

B6 and B7 shared underpinnings so it'd be the same.

I was rear ended in my 2012 A4 and need a replacement. I've done a ton of research and was looking for community opinion. I'm looking at A4 years 2012-2015

I know they fixed a few things in the 2013 b8.5 model, water pumps and such, but there still seem to be a lot of recalls. I know 2014 was less reliable, but things got better in 2015.

Obviously 2015 will be a few thousand more expensive then the 2013, but are there any glaring differences. I've got options on both at 55k miles.

Alternatively, I've been toying with the idea of an Avant or Allroad A4, but I can only find those in 2012, so I'm less apt to get one. Also alternatively, I have hear the 3.0T A6 is a very solid engine.

    2012 A6 3.0T

    2012 A4 Avant 2.0T

    2012 Allroad

    2013 A4 2.0T

    2015 A4 2.0T

    What's your opinion?

Still trying to find a 2.0 avant here in Vancouver. The oil consumption issue is definitely scary and seems like most owner aren't keeping up with maintenance here.

    All,
Found this 2015 S4 and I am really interested about it and wanted to get you guy's input if you think its a good deal or I should keep waiting
    https://www.mercedes-benz-west-chest...bgafl7fa119742

It does have 1 audicare service left, and as far as warranty goes its got about 3 mo or 13k miles left of factory warranty.

I was unsure about the interior color and material as I was looking originally for alcantara/leather mix and wasnt impressed with silver/black color but when I saw it in person I actually like it. Understand the all leather will be cooler in winter and hotter in summer but I guess that's not a deal breaker.

My main concern is the warranty left on it. I have been looking for CPO cars to have that 1 yr piece of mind but haven't seen any around me that I liked.
I dont really want to spend any extra $$ buying an extended warranty.

Am I being paranoid? I just dont want something to break after warranty expires and then I'm in a pickle you know.
