    Car starts and dies immediately

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This happens today and couple days ago too. The car start and dies immediately like no fuel coming. I started and press the gas paddle dies out. It start up for 2 second. Don't know how many times I cranked last crank I press gas paddle boom it started same thing 2 days ago. Battery still good coil and plug changed 10k. I use vcds scanned 2 days ago no CEL no code come up so I keep my vcds in my car and happens just now start and dies like no fuel so I scan it nothing comes up no cel no code. It start up fine now. I'm not sure I hear my fuel pump prime or not bc the area is noisy but I check fuel pressure on vcds block 106 field#2 reads 66%. Is it my fuel pump on its way out? If it is shouldn't it give me a code or something?

I am dealing with a similar issue right now.

Does it do it when the car is cold or hot or both?

How many miles on your car?

Does the car idle at all like for a few seconds or just start die?

I think it does it when engine running hot. It happen 2013 once and 2014 once but it happen twice in one week this year. Not sure it's related to engine is hot. It did idle for few seconds and die. I try to press the gas when start it still dies out. Maybe at 7th try I started and press gas paddle it started. Up until now I start up the car fine.

Could be a air leak. Did you try unplugging the maf sensor and starting the car?

I had this exact thing happen a week ago, and once again today. First time around I thought it may have been some bad/dirty fuel; I am still on the same tank of gas so I have not entirely dismissed that theory. The car runs perfect once it gets past that initial "issue"

I too ran a full VAG-COM scan after and no stored codes.

I have a test for you to do.

First drive the car until the needle is vertical, stop somewhere you will be ok for a few minutes and where you wont get looks for having your hood up. Turn the car off and pop the hood. Try to remove your oil fill cap. Hard to remove?

now leave the oil cap off and start the car. does the car die on you with the oil cap off?

Then with the car running put the oil cap back on, does the car then die?

    Let me know

I had this exact same problem. Car dies abruptly after running normally. Waiting for 15-20 minutes seems to resolve the issue.

    It was the fuel filter.

    Hasn't happened since replacing it.

    Good luck.

I tried it runs didn't die. The oil cap is easily to get it off even the car is running. So I think my vacuum is good?

I replace the fuel filter last year I think it's about 15k on it now. Think I should replace it?

You got me then. That was my thought I am still trying to fix the same issue as you. But I just finished swapping my pcv and that didn't fix it.

Have you try to replace crank sensor? Think that's the culprit

FYI, I replaced my fuel filter ~1,000 miles ago (Mann filter). Not saying that couldn't still be the source the problem, but seems unlikely (in my case).

Didn't get a chance to try your test, but I have replaced my front and rear pcv, as well as my valve cover within the past 10,000 miles. I have not replaced the crank sensor, so may explore that avenue if the problem reappears with my next tank of gas.

When your crank sensor is bad did it crank and idle few seconds and dies out? Mines idle few seconds and dies out even I give it some gas dies immediately.

Could also be the Throttle Body flap (Intake Manifold Flap Motor) stuck open.

When mine was acting up I had no codes, but on cold starts the car would die a couple times after starting up. The engine speed sensor is also called the crank position sensor. I replaced mine and the problem went away

Where is the crank sensor located? Can I change it on top of motor or I need to get under the motor? Might change that and see how it goes.

You can change it from the top, its on the right side of the block under the intake manifold. Its pretty easy but its hard to see what you are doing

Don't get confused there are two sensors that have similar jobs:

    Camshaft Position*Sensor*(G40)
Engine Speed*Sensor(G28) also know as the crankshaft position sensor

Here's my DIY for the latter, voila:
    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=679172

I bought the g40 sensor just haven't tried hard enough to locate it.

Send a picture, I have no idea and haven't looked for it yet. Also doesn't seem many have had issues yet with it. Someone actually told me it lies within the cam chain cover... I don't know why it would.

It is your LP fuel pump pop the rear bench seat off take the three screws off for the cover tap on the pump cover and that will make it better temporarily.

That's the location G40,you need to take the timing cover off.

    Are you 2.0t or 3.2?

I am having the same issue on the 3.2, I figured out that if I get the car moving it will surge really bad and drop to like 400-500 rpm but if I keep the car moving and keep pushing it to go after about 30 seconds to a minute the car will stop surging and drive normally. Still no codes, does anyone know of a location to manually check fuel pressure? I was thinking the thrust sensor is failing.

Ok so it has to be a system we have in common, I am just trying to eliminate as many things as I can. I got to talking to a tech guy and he thought it might be the low fuel pressure sensor but that would throw a code as well. I am hoping you figure it before I lose it and just buy all the sensors.

I dont have a problem starting the car when it is cold. When it is warm the car starts and cranks fine.

I have a 3.2 and have had warm start trouble. However the problem only occurs when the car has reached operating temperature and I shut it off for and 30-60 minutes. It's like it doesn't quite reach the adequate idle RPM when I start it back up again.

I think I got mine fixed. it hasnt done it since last friday and I have been doing the same on/off conditions that it was in before. I replaced my fuel filter and my PCV also gave the tank some seafoam.

I still dont hear my lpfp prime when I open the door to my car in the morning but I think that is an easy fix.

Mines haven't done it since last Friday also but I haven't done anything to it yet..strange. did you replace with oem fuel filter or Mann filter? I changed Mann fuel filter last year it could be faulty might change out to oem.
