when is time to buy new summer tires????

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i've done a few searches and didn't see a thread regarding tread depth...

here's the situation, i just swapped out my summer tires for my winters and took tread depths... i'm measuring between 4-5/32" on all four summer tires... do i go cheap and put these tires back on next spring or buy new tires? the old ones are Mich PSS with 24,000 miles. I'm also thinking of buying new rims for the summer tires and leaving the old winter tires on the audi rims come spring...

    thanks
    Steven

Thats got to be a personal decision. 2/32 is when they are no longer legal. Some people are ok with them being just good enough to pass inspection at inspection time while they the run them down to bald during that summer, others want more sure footedness when it rains out. It really depends on you, how you drive and how much you drive.

I would leave them for a few more miles - you can always swap them if they are not performing - but that seems a little early to dump them IMHO. Now I also wouldn't let them go right to the 2/32 limit either.... I've gone ~5K between readings and mine went from 7/32 to 5/32 - so that means you probably have 3.5 - 4K if you drive really hard (I drive aggressive, but the wifeeee does not so there's a balance to our car)

If you are buying new wheels in the spring, I would just buy new tires at that time as well. In other words if you're buying new wheels of the same size, I wouldn't bother mounting the tires in question on them.

I'm in a similar situation...... my stock Conti's have ~5/32 left but they have gotten pretty loud so I think I will swap them for fresh rubber when spring comes and I'm ready to put the 19" wheels back on the car. I will probably sell them for a couple hundred to someone who needs a set of tires with enough tread to turn in a lease or just doesn't have enough $$$ to buy new tires.

thank you guys for all your comments and experiences! i do remember a recent rain storm we had where i noticed more hydroplaning than normal... With the Stage 2+ mods, i wouldn't say i drive like i stole it, but i do like to have some fun from time to time!
Therefore i have 4-6 months to convince the misses i need new tires, for safety sake :) lol
Now comes the fun part, what do i want!!!!! rofl
