8,000 miles... 1 road trip... same oil?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Next summer I'm planning on doing a solo road trip from KC to Anchorage in the A4. I mapped it out tonight and the routes I want to take (maximum mountain roads ) will end up being around 8,000 miles round trip over about 3 weeks.

I plan on doing a fresh oil change right before I hit the road, but now I'm wondering if I should bring extra oil along, find a parking lot in Anchorage and change it again mid trip? I typically do it every 5,000 miles or so.

What l don't know is if so many miles in one long haul road trip like this is better or worse for the oil, since there will be fewer chances for the oil to cool down.

Carry 5 qts of the oil you normally use for an oil . Your gonna need it for top off anyway for a 8000 mile trip. I would change it after I got home. Oil picks up more in city ing. Once on the highway the oil will burn off all that on those nice long

Shouldn't be a problem if your running a quality oil. I use Amsoil and 8,000/1yr intervals.

If it were me, it would be one of those rare times i would pony up the money and stop at a dealership for an oil change.

Yeah you're going to get mixed responses here. Should you change it? Probably. It's better for the engine. Is something going to happen if you wait til you get back? Probably not.

Have a great time in the trip! I was considering doing something like that. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I do 7500 mile oil changes (Audi service interval is 10k, IIRC), so I wouldn't be concerned at all. Just bring a little extra to top off with if your car burns any, and you'll be fine.

That's what I do every 7000K. Only cost me $70-$80 max depending on the coupon specials. I go in there, have some nice coffee from the cappuccino machine, donuts and Danish if I wish, b.s. a little bit with the sales manager and I'm out of there in about an hour or so with a fresh car-wash. A nice 20-minute drive home by noon.

It is always wise to pack some oil along in such long journey, especially with the B7 engines.

I've been using Castrol Full synth lately and the car seems pretty happy with it. Never heard of Amsoil outside of this site, is that a better oil for our cars? I'm always leary of trying different brands because I've had issues in the past. Both Pennzoil and Valvoline synthetic oil will eventually (2,000 to 4,000 miles) trip a P0017 code until I change it.. Once I switched over to Castrol that problem went away entirely.

I love the Amsoil Euro 5w40,it meets Audi specs and I may top off once between oil changes so min oil consumption.

I would be more concerned on making sure your suspension is good, tires are in good shape and brakes don't need replacing.

    * Also be up to date on your timing belt.

8,000 mile interval is perfectly fine.

May be smart to bring a bit extra if your car burns oil, but don't bother changing it.

Steady state highway miles are the easiest on the engine and oil. You'll be absolutely fine, I wouldn't bother changing it mid-stream. Just bring along a quart or two for topoffs if you have any oil burning issues.

I wouldn't give a second thought to an oil change. highway driving is really easy on oil. Your 8000 mile road trip is about my regular OCI (Amsoil Euro Formula 5W-40). Make sure you are using an OEM or Mann oil filter. I know it's an arguable indicator but I just changed my HPFP cam follower. It had 25,000 miles on it - almost no wear. Could have gone another 10,000 miles without worry. Additionally, I have every third oil changed analyzed by Blackstone labs in Indiana - always plenty of life left on the oil. Unless you beat the shet out of your car or are highly modified, an 8,000 mile OCI is fine provided you use a premium synthetic. Enjoy your trip! Brillo

Thanks everyone for the replies. @FraggyA4, I've definitely got brakes on my maintenance to-do list before the trip. Will probably end up having to do everything on the next brake job (rotors, pads and fluid flush on all four corners). Got some pretty baller grooves going on right now in my original rotors.

@Brillo - I use Wix filters which seem pretty solid so far.

Only reason to bring more oil is if you burn it, otherwise, Im sure plenty of blackstone analyses are available to show people getting well beyond 8,000 miles SAFELY on one oil change interval. I don't think it would be an issue. What is your oil brand?

Fresh oil and filter change before the journey. A couple of quarts in the trunk in case your car burns oil.

Clean air and cabin air filter, good tires, brakes, suspension, all lights working, no rattles inside the car, all fluids topped off, spare wheel with good air pressure, a quart of 50/50 Audi coolant, some basic tools. Thats all you need for the car before the journey.

Castrol Edge 5w30. I go through about a quart in between changes. She's definitely not as thirsty for oil any more after the PCV and valve cover gasket change.

Probably the finest oil. I use (0W-30) on my other car

Maybe switch to 5w-40 for the trip. I use liquimoly. Car seems to like it better than castrol.

wow 8000 miles. Most of the routes would be pretty isolated i bet.
oil change should be the least of your worry. Pack some ignition coils and check on your tires/brakes before you set off. This includes the spare.
