At what point does the AMB 1.8t low oil light come on?

I have been negligent and not checked my oil in a WHILE.

Checked it today and it was LOW, past the hash marks and at the bend in the dipstick LOW :(

Approx 6500KM (4038.913M) since last oil change. I guess my 2nd question is if this is normal consumption for this mileage. 270000KM ( 167770.222M ) on engine and had to put in approx 1/2L

According to Audi "normal" consumption as much as 1 litre per 1000 miles is within manufacturing tolerances. Sounds excessive to me.

For what it's worth I have never had to add any oil between my 5,000 mile OCI's and I am now well over 200k miles. Initial break in is key. Unfortunately if you didn't purchase the vehicle new (as I did) you are at the mercy of the previous owner.

Guess I'm just lucky? I never need to top up between changes, but do changes regularly. 145K miles. Do you remember checking it at all after your last change? If you're using a large filter the media can absorb a lot if you don't recheck after the engine is run for a bit. Much oil in your intercooler hosing or belly pan or the like?

I don't add any oil between changes normally. Recently I've been battling an oil leak from my FrankenTurbo F21L mixed flow. It will all(entire short block & turbo assembly) be coming out this week. Even with the leak I only add 1/2 quart every 3000m. The 1.8T as opposed to the 2.0T is a very tight motor and does not burn/lose oil if everything is in spec and there are no leaks.

How is this excessive? I have burnt thru approx 1/2L in 4000 Miles. By your listed Audi standards I should have gone thru 4L

I'm at similar mileage and just did an oil change and didn't add any oil since the previous owner changed it ~8000 kms ago. I know my half moon seal is seeping a bit, so I will need to address that before too long. Also, got my Blackstone labs report back with good comments.

0.5L is probably not too bad, but definitely keep an eye on it. I check mine everyone ~1000 kms or whenever I have the hood up for whatever reason.

I think he means that the Audi standard is too excessive. Your consumption is not too bad, but check around the bay for some seepage somewhere.

Only oil I ever lost was from leaks, and not consumption by a fault in the engine or turbo. Things running normal, I lose no oil.

My main loss is at my drain plug. My best remedy so far was to take off the stock washer and swap in my own 14mm copper ones every OCI. Doesn't work perfect, but giant steps ahead how it was previous.

Yep. I was referring to the Audi standard.

In my 3.0, the oil light comes on when it is ~1L low. I would imagine that the 1.8T is similar, but it sounds like you were right at the edge of the light coming on.

Interesting. My 02 1.8 and my 05 1.8 do not lose any oil. I change the oil every 4000 miles and never have to add any in between. Both engines have 100,000 miles.

Luckily my AMB doesn't go through any oil at all between changes so the initial owner did break the engine in properly as OG mentioned. That's one of the reasons I'm keeping the car for a while. I currently have 225K km (140K miles) with a stage 1 flash and it pulls strong, though I can do without the initial turbo lag for city driving.

My 3.0 showed me the oil light once. Even when I pulled over when I stopped at a nearby Walmart for some Rotella, there was no oil on the stick. That was immediately after driving it off, so there could have been some oil that hadnt made its way back down to the pan yet. Either way, I was about a quart and half short (3.0 takes about 7 qts total). My oil leak was from the oil cooler housing. Pulled the "gasket" out (not the same as the 1.8) and applied some black RTV and its been good ever since. I burn probably a quart over 5k with 135K on the engine. I got it with 99k and a friend owned it from 88-99 so the first 88k is unknown to me.

I am going through the same thing. My only source of an oil leak is my drain plug, I've put in a new drain washer every oil change and have completely tightened it and still leaks oil through there slowly. The threads are probably messed up.
