    Can I replace the battery?

    Hi
I have an Audi A4 B8 TDI 2010. 10 days ago I saw the message "battery low will be charged while running". I don't see it after that but the radio not turning on automatically. I'm thinking to change the battery now to avoid problems in colder days. I did lot of research online if it can be done easily, most of the people suggest, it needs coding and we should buy only from Audi dealer to get the coding. I spoke to both tayna.com and eurocarparts, they insist the batteries Bosch or Varta supplied by them also come with coding.
But some suggested non dealer batteries will not have the required 10digit code. Most of the threads are old I don't see this discussed in recent times.
I'm really confused and need some help. The dealer is asking a fortune for part and labour.
My plan is to buy it online and take it to a garage to fix it. I can do the coding at home with VCDS, I have it. Please suggest
    Thanks
    John

Swapping batteries should be straight forward. Could the "coding" they are referring to be the audio security code? That is good to have whenever you disconnect the electrical system. But you shouldn't need that unless you are changing audio/ECU components. I've never heard of specific coding for individual batteries.

Code it its your best bet it's not for the radio it's for the car to know its new. You don't have to but again it's better for the car plus if you have VCDS then why not.

I know yours was but I don't think that is a common occurrence.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I still have some doubts regarding coding as I just found if your car does not show battery info in MMI you don't need coding at all. Mine does not show, but again some say it the battery info might be hidden on the MMI, we need to do something else to enable it. I never thought changing a car battery is this difficult.

Go with safe and code your battery...

    Regarding battery meter just activate:
    Enable Battery meter
[Hidden menu] [car] [cardevextdevicelist] [Battery] Enable
[Hidden menu] [car] [carmenuoperation] [Battery] Set to 5
    Reset MMI
    or
    [56 - Radio] -> Adaption -> Channel 39, add 16 to your value
    Retrofits: FL taillights / MMI 3G & 3G+(Street view incl.)/ Color Cluster & FL S5 Cluster/ BiXenon/ ADS Lite

All b8 a4s have battery control modules and the batteries should be coded. The serial number is not all that important and you could just change the last digit as stated above. Coding is important because it shows the battery module what a fully charged battery looks like as well as all the specs on the battery. This allows the car to tell you when the battery is getting low as well as vary how much of the alternator current goes into the battery. Thus also dictates shut down stages which is turn off non vital systems of the car in case of low battery to ensure there is enough power to start

Mine was hidden and used Carista app to unlock the battery meter. Meter Reset it self after three days and now shows full battery.

    Hi
Was it just a battery swap or coding too, if yes do the non OEM batteries have the necessary coding. Part number and serial number? As many people suggest coding is very important when changing battery.
    Thanks
    John

^ There are some threads on this. It's best to code it in vcds. Enabling battery meter isn't coding it and it can only be enabled on prefacelift I believe.
