    Exclamation Need help with CEL.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and recently joined as I need some assistance with fault codes on my 2010 A4.
I'm not very mechanically smart but I'm scared to take it to a dealer right now as money is tight (baby).

The other day I turned my car on and it started idling rough. The car would shake and you could hear it in the exhaust pipe.
The CEL came on the next day along with the EPC light. The car will not start now. Everything clicks but no turnover.

I pulled VAG COM codes below for the engine. I was going to try and replace the sensors but I'm scared this might be more serious.
    Please help.

Looks like you're close to 80k miles on the car. Could be either the G28 (cam position sensor) or the G40 (engine speed sensor, I think the crank position sensor?) going bad on you. That would explain why every cylinder is misfiring. Maybe someone here knows how to test each sensor to see if it reads okay...

Start by changing out your spark plugs and ignition coils (very easy), then clear the codes and see if they stay away,

P0016 00 [237] - Incorrect Correlation, 4096 - Bank 1: CMP Sensor (G40) / Engine Speed Sensor (G28), is not good, incorrect correlation can mean a serious timing issue.

I had a 75k done it and I believe they changed the plugs already.

I'm not very savvy when its comes to engines. I was hoping it would be a simple sensor that needs to be replaced. This code though to me suggests something else could be wrong.
I may need to end up taking it in because I have no idea how to mess with it.

Do anyone else have any thoughts on this error?
My symptoms are identical to these but the code is different.

Take it in, it's worth paying the $120 diagnostic fee, especially if you have a baby, I doubt you have the extra time to track down and research this fully.

You clearly have an issue with your Flux Capacitor.....wait wut? Only way to fix is to crank it over 88mph. I can't be the only one that noticed this.....

    UPDATE:

I had the car towed into Audi Dealer and there is a timing issue going on. Audi is still looking at it but they say it's likely a new engine will be needed.

This appears to be the issue

Lucky for me I was still under CPO Warranty. I'll update the thread as I get more info.

    UPDATE 1:
Audi approved a new engine so that's nice at least. Avoided a very expensive repair.
My dealer contact says it looks like the timing chain stretched. Is that even possible? They saw wear on the cylinder head where the pistons were hitting valves.

Well shite. Sounds like it's time for me to get the timing chain service done.

    How many miles you have?

So much for this being a "lifetime" part

The tensioners are the problem, I think. There is a revised one that doesn't fail, but I might as well do a full chain and tensioner swap if I am getting in there. However, if I can get a dealer to do it for around $1K and give me a loaner, I'll go that route vs just $600 for parts.

I saw that too when he posted originally. Looks like ross-tech sneaks that one in on all scans. I wonder, though, if there is a vag-com mod to enable it.

Sort of. The links of the chain don't actually "stretch" but a small bit of wear happens at each pivot point, and when you add all the wear up, the total length of the chain increases. Many mechanics just call this chain stretch. Same deal happens with motorcycle drive chains. The tensioner is supposed to mitigate this, but here are known issues with the tensioners in our engines.
