Why are they so strict on that? :'(

Because Audi made its name with the quattro rally cars...

I like to think they were all designed for cold and tough climates. They kick ass in New England... I could never own a RWD Bimmer or Merc as a daily driver up here...too scary.
I'm living for the day I can park something Italian inside of my house.

I had one wild summer on match.com. -some jackass

Quattro (at least on S models) does favor the rear wheels, but like the others have posted; Audi has made its name in AWD. To offer another configuration option would likely raise manufacturing costs, marketing costs, and general confusion.

There are plenty of RWD cars out there and breaking into that market won't give Audi an advantage, they probably couldn't steal enough RWD enthusiasts from other brands to even make it viable.

I know about quattro, I know the advantages and my question is, why doesn't audi offer RWD variants, stability is cool, oversteer is fun. Why only cater to one.

I'm sure if they released lets say an S3 cabrio with RWD, it would sell a lot :o

It is more cost effective to add AWD to a FWD car. Saves space and weight. And FWD is safer in general.

Take a look at the entire VAG lineup.

As I mentioned above the cost to market and manufacture limits the viability of a new drivetrain in the Audi lineup.

Simply removing the power to the front wheels doesn't make it a good RWD car, it takes tuning and precision meaning you likely need a new production line or need to alternate RWD/(FWD/AWD) builds to different weeks. It would require more testing, more documentation, more training, more marketing, and to what end? The A3 is already flying off the lot with a sales increases by over 2000% percent in 2014, is the cost of introducing a new drivetrain going to be worth it? No. The price of car would have to rise to cover the costs mentioned above (and maintain profit margins) and you start to limit the market again.

Yes but I think it would be profitable in terms of fulfilling a gap in their offerings.

I love my A4, but I'm also a guy who really enjoys oversteer and I like Audi's philosophy more than BMW's.

I think as a premium german company, they should at least have one model that satisfies this need.
My next car might not be an Audi, and that's sad. I need a toy that also happens to be an audi.

Audi started as a fwd car manufacturer, even in the early 1900s they only produced fwd. From the revamp in 1964 to the introduction of Quattro, all their cars were also fwd. Before Audi was heavily involved in motorsports, they were focused solely on luxury, akin to the 70s fwd Eldorado, which was way more popular than its rwd Lincoln counterpart. Also, both Audis fwd and awd trans configurations are the same with a built in front diff. They don't even have a transmission in their parts catalog that would be suitable for rwd. As for the haldex cars like the tt and a3, these cars are completely set up like a fwd, transverse engine and all, so it would cost even more to reengineer them in rwd form. I too would love a rwd option, but that's not very cost effective for them and really goes against their target market.

    Thank you for the information!
I just hope they do it, there's a first for everything.

Mercedes Benz made their first FWD sedan the CLA, lets hope audi also tries something new and surprise all of us :P

If they could just bring the RS Avants and air ride suspension for the Allroad would be great.
