What causes the battery light to come on besides the battery itself? My battery is a red top optima that is only a few months old and when I scan with my ross-tech scanner I am not getting any codes that could possibly pertain to the battery or charging. Any ideas would be appreciated since I will be taking a trip for Christmas soon and i don't want to have any problems.

This is my most recent scan:

Your alternator, check the voltage with a multimeter at the terminals, if it's not 14+ you need a new one

Found the issue , the belt had come off the alternator completely. Picked up a new belt today, but looks like I have to tear apart half the front end to get to it.

its super easy. Just put it into service position, unload the tensioner and reinstall the belt. My guess (and suggestion) would be to install a new tensioner and belt. should only take an hour tops for the complete swap

Yeah it was more like 4 hours lol. all the write ups and videos i found were for B6's and there were some minor differences on my B7 so I was being overcareful not to break anything. Then to top it off I kept looking for bolt/screws that were not there anymore because the PO jacked it up. The drivers side of the bumper would not come off because the moron used a drywall screw under the reflector screwed into the plastic part behind it to hold it into place. The belt itself only took a few minutes to put on once I figured out how to get everything off without breaking anything more then was already rigged up.

Never had an issue with them as long as you don't let them completely die from sitting there not being used. I run a yellow top in my truck and it has started up even with the lights being left on for 2 hours.

I used an autocraft platinum last year when my 7 year old oem battery died. My alternator belt snapped and battery light went on in sept. I was able to drive about 75 miles and it was still running on battery juice without charging.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from a quick look at the Optima website their batteries are smaller and lighter because they have a lower Ah rating than the OEM batteries (which are in the 95-105Ah range) - so the Optima batteries weight advantage is also their biggest disadvantage when (like in the post above) the alternator is no longer charging.

With an AGM battery you can get starter current capacity up to 920Ah, so apart from their physical advantage of lower weight I can't see any electrical advantage (especially in cold weather) to an Optima over the AGM version of the OEM battery.

    Or am I missing something?

I am not the first one to put an Optima in a S4 and I haven't read any adverse side effects from any of the forums I saw it done on. The CCA are plenty even though i will never be in temps below freezing (30 is about as low as i will see). Like Guitarmageddon I was able to drive for a while on pure battery power without the alternator running, I have never made it more then 10-15 minutes in any other vehicle when the alternator has gone out.

Its been noted that Optima batteries quality has declined over the years since mfg has moved to Mexico.

a lot of the batteries out on the market are made from the same suppliers, just rebranded. Walmart batteries are made by Johnson Controls, so are Varta and Optima. I always go on the rule of thumb, buy what has the best warranty and be happy with it. A $400 battery could die just as fast as a $100 battery. Either way you will have to pull it to return it. Better off buying one with a good warranty for WHEN it fails, not IF
1997 VW GTI VR6 (sold), 2003 Audi RS6 (sold), 2010 Audi A4 2.0T (RIP Totaled on 11/2/2015 ) 2005.5 Audi S42011 Dieselgate Q7 TDI..... patiently waiting for my warranty to expire!!
