Someone Talk me out of this...or don't ;)

I'm not sure if anyone knows me from the B6 A4 forum, but for years, I was pretty active there with my 03 1.8TQ. In 2014, I made the decision to sell the car and ever since, I have been missing it (except when I remember it breaking down and frustrating the crap out of me). Well here it is almost 2016 and with a new year, comes new opportunity. Basically, I've pretty much convinced myself to get another Audi (about 85% of the way there). A smaller, yet equally important factor, was just being active on this forum. The levels of help I've received, as well as entertainment value, makes this forum the best car-enthusiast site hands down, IMO.

For this round, I'm looking to get a B7 DTM S4 6sp with RNS-E. I've been keeping my eyes peeled on auto trader and cars.com for the right one so well see what falls in my lap. Budgets suck, so I'm pretty much looking at a high mileage one (100k mi+) which scares me but I already have a daily driver, so I'm hoping that even if this one breaks down, the levels of daily stress should be significantly reduced.

Here was my old car, "Amy":

As always, if budget is tight like you said, make sure paperwork for the timing chain is on hand. Not saying it will happen immediately but with a 100k+ car, it can so be prepared. Another item to note is to get the car independently checked out to make sure that when you drive it off the lot, you're not buying a car that requires thousands of dollars worth of work because of neglect.

If the price is too good to be true, then it usually means it is. Look at comparable prices in your area (or the car's current location) and see what they should be valued at and then make an informed decision.

    Good luck!

Agreed, if you already have a daily like you say then why settle for an Automatic, you're already compromising on mileage. The main reason I'm looking to move out of my USP Avant is that I compromised on something I said I wouldn't, an automatic, otherwise I would drive my car into the ground.

I don't feel like the RNSE should be a deciding factor. Gen 1 (pre 2010) can be had for under $400. Crappy unit anyways.

Thanks as always. I believe, however, that some may have missed the following from my original post:

I was pretty much planning on verifying the timing chain/tensioner replacement as my primary issue of focus.

The RNS-E isn't exactly THE deciding factor. But when weighed next to the regular Symphony head units, it was definitely a step up. Again, my decision tree pretty much goes as:

    1. DTM
    2. 6 speed manual
    3. RNS-E

Also, "just because", here was the source of my infatuation/utter disdain. LoL

Coventry Motorcar has a unicorn... well, what I was looking for a year ago before getting my DTM.

'6 speed and gray. Also has the black alcantara inserts. '08 with 91k and asking $19k. I would change out the wood trim. Appears to have RS4 reps and pedals, so maybe an enthusiast / forum member had it.

*i think people mentioned auto v manual because the red DTM you pictured is an auto.

That is pretty much what I was looking for! I'm not sure if I would label it as a "unicorn" as my unicorn would be red. LoL

Also, I would have to give a tip of the cap to power and beauty of HDR photography.

I knew it was auto nor did it have an RNS-E, but it was so damn clean that it pretty much set the spark.

Yea what I meant was, if you could find 6mt and dtm don't let the RNSE hold you back as it is cheap enough and easy to retrofit.

Yea that's one good looking DTM! But I have to agree with others, I'd look for a manual. Driving experience is quite different between auto and manual, at least that's how I feel. On the other hand if you must have an auto, that's the one. Good luck either way!

I came across a 6 spd not too long ago while shopping for my S. I ended up settling on an 05' with 58k, but I'll try and find that DTM and post it.

My good friend Matt ("whatset" on here) is selling his very low mileage, extremely well built DTM S4 here in Phoenix. You may want to contact him, it's an awesome car. http://www.audizine.com/forum/member.php/35895-Whatset

Coventry Motorcar simply flips cars. They buy mostly at auction, put forth minimal effort in servicing, repairing or cleaning the vehicle then sell it to you at a price a few hundred to a few thousand over market value.

They are simply a used Euro car dealer... nothing special.

Also, from personal experience I recommend that anyone who purchases a car from Coventry assume that no pre-sale maintenance was done and just go ahead and service all the fluids the day after you drive it off their lot.

I think they have some pretty lackluster hourly techs. I'm guessing that these techs tell the sales team, "yeah... i changed the oil yesterday" when actually they performed absolutely zero maintenance on the vehicle in question. Haha

broken latches, engine knocks... minimal effort indeed. Wouldn't bother me so much if the prices were a bit better, but hey 'merica.

So as an enthusiast, you just have to learn how to talk them down and you could still get a car from them that is worth having. I will say that every once in a while they pick up an enthusiast owned car that is in excellent shape... so it's always worth checking out their website just in case.

While I was living in Los Angeles I drove a 5 speed Hyundai Elantra... I was only able to drive that thing in traffic for about 8 months before I couldn't walk anymore. Needless to say I traded in the car for a used Infiniti G35 with TIP. BEST MOVE EVER!

Not only did the car drive nearly was well as an B6/B7 S4, but my knee no longer hurt and I could walk again!
