Question B6 Automatic to manual help

Hi, this is my first post. I've been needlessly struggling to find answers reading forum after forum here on audizine. It finally occurred to me that I could just ask. I'm currently attempting to swap a 1997 01A Quattro 5spd trans into my 2004 A4, I've already found a decent amount of info on getting this done but I cannot seem to find info on which set of front axle flanges I need to get. I pulled one of my flanges out and compared it side by side with some b6 fwd axle flanges (because that was all I could find) and I fount that the splines that adapt into the trans are significantly larger on the b6 platform. Is there some b6 axle flanges with a smaller set of splines or? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I would think just grabbing new/used axles meant for the manual would be the easiest route to take.

    Pictures would also be helpful.

I've figured out what needs to be done for the axles themselves, it's swapping out the flanges on the side of the transmission that I'm not sure on, namely it is finding the appropriate b6 flanges with the smaller sized splined shaft or finding out if swapping b6 flanges into a b5 trans involves something else

Coming up with flanges on their own (without a transmission attached to them) is pretty tricky. Most junkyards will not want to sell flanges separately from the trans. I'm not sure whether the slines are beefed up for the B6 chassis, or just for FWD models. Somebody that deals with taking apart transmissions all the time would know. Scotty at Advanced Automotion would likely be somebody in the know. Somebody at JHMotorsports might also have that information.

I would think your "smaller spline" tripod joint flanges would come from either a B6 quattro or a B5. There were a few B5 models that used the tripod flanges on manual trans application. On the A4's there were only a very few of them (some specific V6 FWD codes). I believe they were more common on the B5 and B5.5 Passats. ECS has a nice picture of the B5 A4 / B5 Passat part:

Rather than swapping flanges, you can use B5 2.8 quattro axles (will fit 100mm inner flange on 97 quattro trans and the 82mm outer joint for the B6), but I do believe there is a small track width issue (B6 is slightly wider track). In the thread that customa4 linked, I think the owner solved it with a spacer on the inner CV joint.

Thanks for the info. I know there's a b5 2.8 6spd Quattro at my local pic-a-part yard that still has the front axles. I'm not sure on the exact year but it's definitely a b5. Getting a spacer made wouldn't be a big deal either. Would it be worth my time to go pull those?

    If it's a B5 A4, then it's a 5-speed, not a 6-speed. But that's fine, those are the axles you want.
