    Looking at a used A6

I am in the market for a used A6 (a C6, or maybe even a C5) I had an Audi 80 back in the 90's and I loved it. I now drive a 2006 Mini cooper S with a 15% smaller pulley and a few more mods. It is also a 6 speed manual and it's my daily driver. I am looking for something with equal or greater performance. If I could mod it slowly that would be a plus too. It would also become my daily driver. I am amazed how many engine options there were for these cars. I am not sure if I want a 2.0t, a 4.2 v8, a 3.2... I am looking for something reliable and do a lot of my own work to my cars. I would assume that the car I get would have around 100k on it.

Are there certain engines, cars, transmissions to avoid?

I also just looked at a 07 BMW 328xi, but it had an awful list of problems on the forums.

IMO you should look for a 09+ with the 3.0T. Super reliable and modable.

The 4.2, 3.2 and 3.0t (supercharged) are the most common motors of the C6 family. The ability to do mods to gain power is pretty limited in the 4.2 and 3.2. The 3.0 offers more options to make power. If the 09 and above 3.0t is within your budget, I would go with that. If not, then go with the 4.2 motor of 07-08 model year.

I would definitely second getting the 3.0 T if possible. It seems that 3.2 is a pretty reliable motor as well... If you're going with the 4.2 around 100,000 miles, may be best to do a little looking about getting the timing chain tensioners replaced. Others know a lot more about this than I do, but it's a good way to get an $8- $10k surprise.

I'll ask others to forgive me if I'm wrong, but either way can't go wrong with the c6... But of course I'm biased. Good luck!

I agree to the previous suggestions - buy a 3.0T, you can find a well maintained 2009/2010 3T under $20k. 3T motor is not only fun, fast, reliable and modable, its also very fuel efficient, I average 22.5 Miles on a mixed driving condition which is great considering the amount of power this motor has. So, 3.0 T pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase.
