Not sure if he had more packing under the hood but, Evo's are crazy fast when modified. And they have endless amounts of turbo options. Loved mine when I had it a few years ago. Just seems like a "boys" car these days.

I know your pain. Try going down the 1/4 mile and slipping 2-4th gear.... Embarrassing when you pull back to the staging lane and the people are "Who has the manual that doesn't know how to drive?"

those new 8 speed ZF trans. that other models are using are no slouch. I think they are just as quick as the dsg trans and are capable of handling more power (reason they used it in the rs7) and are a bit more smooth to drive.

My stock S4 put down the same power as my fully bolt on Evo X with the stock turbo. You should be able to walk all over a stock Evo X in your stock S4... without the clutch slipping of course!

Chocolate Chip Waffles??? But for real, I'm a big fan of the ZF Transmission in the Jaguar F-Type AWD-R Coupé I drive for work, I'm actually excited for the B9 platform. As I'm getting older, I'm getting tired of clutching and shifting

While his waffle looks nice and browned as it should, it also has extra syrup on it, which it shouldn't. Lots of people on these forums seem to enjoy eating their waffles with extra syrup causing per-maturely eaten waffles. If you keep your waffle at the right temperature, syrup won't ooze out of it xD

Did you fully bolt on Evo X have a tune? What did you fully stock S4 put down? What type of dyno? Trans for each car? Same day conditions? I only ask because my car stock (Roc-Euro intake) W/DSG put down 290 just after my buddies EvoX w/manual trans, bolt ons and a mild tune put down 330 on the same mustang dyno on the same day with decent weather...As you should know EvoX's are super easy to make power and given their weight easily can out run our cars

Agreed and part of my point and a jab at "the DSG is king" crowd. So awesome it was dropped in favor of the ZF

thanks for the love guys. I'm not stock but it has happened in the past when stock too. I bought it CPO so no telling how the previous owner treated it (although the car is in really good shape otherwise.)
My wife was in the car. She wondered what happened. I told her that my clutch is going out and I am going to have to buy a new one. She glared at me, probably envisioned stabbing me and started bitching about how expensive my car has been. My response: Ya sorry about that.
P.S. DSG is for pussies!!! *ducks*

I have nothing against manuals. I've owned four or five and always enjoyed them. I don't understand why anyone would want a manual S4 though. I say that purely based on reliability. It's a known weak link. What's worse, if you're buying a manual, more likely than not you're going to want to flog it. What buy a manual you can't drive hard? On the other hand, the DSG is bulletproof in this car (not the early ones, granted).

I really have nothing against the DSG and would have still bought my same car if it was the DSG. Just giving you DSG guys crap because I am jealous how easy it is to launch it.

i think it's the delay valve that slows the 1st to 2nd shift but yeah it is a tough shift to execute in rapid fashion mainly because the rpm's take so long to fall.

Seeing so many repair bills upwards of over 3500$ for so many b8 S4's an option that also costs 2k more to add to the car from the factory (if i recall correctly - i'm estimating so.. ) so perhaps even w/o a mechatronic failure it's all a wash by the time you have replaced a clutch. ( i should put a disclaimer as well * I have nothing against dsg!)

My Evo (5spd) and S4(6spd) were there different days however with very similar conditions. So not a perfect apple to apple compare but atleast gives an idea of what to expect. It was on a dyno dynamics in Calgary, and The Evo was there with approx. 10 other evos all getting tuned, stock turbo with all the standard bolt ons (intake, exhaust, test pipe, boost controller, IC piping and so on) and I put down around 295 iirc. All the stock turbo guys were around that mark, few over 300 but they had a few other little mods to help that mine did not. The S4 put down 291 completely stock iirc, you can find all the details here on audizine, I went down with a few other S4's to give them a stock baseline to determine if their tunes were working lol. Its worth while to mention I have been out of the EvoX tuning world for almost 3 years now so maybe they are getting more out of stock turbos then when I was around.

Cant say anything about your results but mine show the stock S4 was very damn close to my stock turbo EvoX with a bunch of parts and a good tune. Having done a lot of track days in the Evo it was pretty apparent right away when I got my S4 it was damn close to my Evo's performance out of the box, but as you mention much heavier lol.

So what's the plan for replacement? Mine is also slipping pretty bad when granny shifting and WOT. Was keeping up with a couple RS5's until I slipped halfway through third. Slipped most of fifth a few weeks back... Agreed, Lame.

The fact that Audi is doing that really has nothing to do with any determination that the ZF 8 speed is a "better" overall transmission (I have the DSG in my S4 and ZF in my wife's SQ5 and the DSG is a little quicker but at the expense of smoothness), it is more likely a cost cutting move by Audi and maybe they can make the 8th gear more like overdrive to help CAFE ratings. So maybe in Audi's mind more $'s to the bottom line and easier compliance with fuel economy ratings = "Better".

But using your same logic, I guess I can return the volley and say 'manual transmissions in Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches etc. were so awesome that they were dropped in favor dual clutch transmissions'...but I won't

Huh...that is baffling...unless they are using a much cheaper/less reinforced version of the 7 speed DSG since the torque tolerances of the base A4 don't have to be as high.

Here's my old Evo X with a 91 octane tune, no other parts added. I think bone stock Evo X does 260WHP on this dyno...

Here's my 2011 S4 bone stock on the same dyno

Sorry for newbie questions, this is my 1st Audi

While I love waffles, I don't recommend them as a clutch replacement. Luckily we do have an option that will suit your clutch needs:
