A4 B8 Rear View Mirror with Compass installation

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Today I replaced my rear-view mirror with a newer version that has auto-dimming and a compass!
I have a 2010 Audi A4 Quattro with the Premium Plus package. I bought it new in 2010. Always wanted a mirror with the compass in it.
Prices have finally fallen to the point that you can do this cheaply!
I bought the mirror from Ebay for only $80. It is from a 2012 Audi A4.
This was literally a 3 minute installation.
    See the video here:
    https://youtu.be/bv8sQHXu2nM

    Instructions:
    1. Remove top cover by pulling it toward you.
    2. Turn mirror counter-clockwise (to the left) 90 degrees. Mirror comes off of mount on windshield.
    3. Unclip wiring harness.
    4. Put new mirror up to window, turn 90 degrees clockwise to mount.
    5. Plug in wiring harness.
    6. Put top cover on.
    7. Press power button and hold until you see an number. Press the power button until you set it to your region (see owners manual).
    8. Set to "C" and drive in a circle at 6mph until the direction shows up.
    Done!

Nice find. I couldn't find a used one that I liked when I did this mod so I ended up paying full freight on a brand new one. But I did get a black one. I think it was oem for a B7 RS4. I'm Premium (base) so we weren't so lucky to find the harness and had to tap into some power overhead.

Still one of my favorite mods.

So you didn't need to clear any codes or activate anything with VAGCOM?

Does anyone else know a part number besides 8R0857511C Z62 for a rear view mirror like this?

I've had my eye out for one for my 2010 P+ but I've had some trouble finding a compatible version that isn't $300+. Looks like mine is a 3 prong mount with 8 pin connector. Lots and lots of 6 pin versions on ebay.

No, I didn't even disconnect the battery. Plug and play. I had to do the calibration as per the owners manual, set the region code and then drive around in a circle, but no vagcom needed.

Not sure what you mean. I show the connection old and new side by side in the video. Original had 3 wires in the connector, with a total of 8 spaces (5 empty) Compass mirror had 6 wires, same 8 space connector (2 empty). I got it on ebay for $80. I'm thinking I have the same connection you need.

Many of the mirrors on ebay that have compass and auto dimming have a 6 pin connector, not an 8 pin connector. I've only found 1 so far that has the 8 pin and it's $180 from poland.

I was about to put in an offer on the only one I had found and just realized the mounting was wrong. So I actually haven't found a single one with 3 mounting prongs and an 8 pin connector.

It's because you need one with the 6 pin, not 8. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think we are needing one with 8 pins and if they would even apply to our car.

I have one sitting in my garage. I can check when I get home to see how many pins it is.

I should have added, that I probably won't be using~

When I say pins I'm meaning pin locations. The harness in my car only has 3 wires but the connector has 8 locations. All of the mirrors I'm seeing on ebay have connectors that only appear to have 6 locations and they are all full (no empty pins). In the video on the top post he's going from a 3 wire to 6 wire, but notice how there are 8 pin locations in the connector. Does that make sense?

    The same mirror was used in the A4, A5, S4, S5, Q5, A8 and S8. FYI

Right, I do wonder if the B7 mirror would work. The color looks a little different but mostly the same as the B8.

They years I see compatible for the A4 are 2010-2012 and 2013-

Looks like maybe the 2009s shared an earlier model. There are a lot of B7 mirrors on ebay, and for under $50. Would be a relatively inexpensive experiment.

Yeah I've been looking at them and not sure if I should try it. I just need a real light (almost white) mirror and I'm set.... I still want S-Line seats

The illusive Z62 color code. There are a few J50's (grey) on German eBay for around $130, but I can't find any Z62 in the 8R0857511C.

I think this is the newest revision # and there are numerous older part numbers that will work. Digging them up now.

It is the newest, the old part number was 8T0857511C Z62. I think I have a guy I'm about to buy it off of now.

You need the 8 pin connector (8 pin holes in the connector body, not all have wires) if you have the 3 zone climate control (has an air temp control thumb-wheel on the back of the center console, for the rear passengers). The 3-zone climate control version has a humidity sensor in the mirror base, it looks like a white circle behind the grill-slots on the mirror base.

Otherwise you need the 6 pin connector. The other variable is the mounting claw on the mirror, some are 3 prong, some are 4 prong.

    Then I'm set.

Info like this is good for the next person to do this.
