    Coolant Temp Gauge Weirdness....

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Noticed a strange issue earlier......

I took a half hour drive and the coolant temp gauge barely peaked over zero, same drive on the way back and the coolant temp gauge was in the middle in not all that long.

How long does it normally take in 40 degree weather for the needle to move at all, and what could be going on right now? I scanned it for codes, nothing came up.

    Any ideas?

I'm noticing this too. When I drive to work it is usually midpoint within 10 min. Now it takes> than 15 minutes and when I turn on the heater it goes back to the left a bit. Don"t have a numerical gauge.
These two threads seem to describe the symptoms accurately:

I would bet that your coolant temperature sensor is acting up. Are your valve cover gaskets and/or passenger's side camshaft tensioner leaking oil? Usually the oil leaking onto the CTS causes the sensor to fail.

By the way, your car looks like the twin of mine. Mine is green with the same wheels too.

Yeah mine is taking longer to heat up around NOVA as well. When I turn the heat on with the fan on full blast then the coolant temp goes back down a little bit. If I turn the fan down to one or two bars then the coolant temperature goes back up to the middle.

I have a CTS and oil pressure switch to throw in but I haven't done it yet.

@JimmyBones, I just bought the valve cover gasket to replace because I noticed a leak back there. I'm going to replace it first when I do the gasket before I go with the thermostat.

    Thanks

That's pretty cool, haha. Got any pictures of yours?

No oil is leaking from anything, luckily. There's no code anywhere though.

Last month I had to change out the front outer CV boots to pass VA safety inspection and this picture was while in the process of doing that.
