Where can I get a freeze plug for passenger head?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The last part I need for this ehad swap is the freeze plug that sits behind the cam cover on the front of the head on the passenger side.
Please let me know so I can button this thing up finally.

I would try the dealer of you want OEM. Otherwise, check the diameter with a micrometer and just get a generic freeze plug that matches up.
Stock engine with some rods tossed in. 11.25@132mph.

Umm, that looks like a driver side head to me
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

It would have the engine code stamped on it by the lift hole at the top right of pic
That plug should already be there, I think I can see where the oring was from the crossover pipe.

You can use them on either side, but there are a few things you need to do.
What work did you do recently?

Valves were bent, so I got this head from a friend.
New head gasket is all the work so far. Setting the chain links now.

What needs to happen for it to work properly?

Well on the back side you might have a plugged end that should be open to the water pipe as stated above.

The coolant pope on the rear is mounted to the head with both bolts. Are you saying that hole may be plugged?
It looks like the bolt pattern in the pic above wouldn't line up with the coolant pipe?

That's driver side head. Which is fine, but as mentioned above, you need to unplug the coolant port on the back of it, put freeze plug in (which you already determined to be the case), verify that you don't have EGR ports open (now that would make for a nasty surprise) if you don't need them for your engine combo and generally see if nothing else is not missed ....

ETKA is the Audi/ VW part program. I would go to the dealer since it didn't look like many places were selling them online.

OK, so I got this straight I need to do the following:
    - Insert freeze plug in the front of the block
    - Check rear coolant channel to make sure there is NOT a freeze plug in there. If there is, remove it
    - Check EGR valves to make sure they are closed

I have no idea what the EGR valves are or how to check for open/closed.
    Any advice is appreciated.

Not EGR, SAI (secondary air injection) ports.

Its this one here with the ball pounded in the hole.

And unfortunately, if that head had sai, the hole you need to plug is now behind the timing cover

The cams (and covers) are not fixed in place yet, just sitting there, so I can check when I get home.

Is there a possibility that the head did not have this SAI at all?
If it does, is there a ball on the rear that I need to remove as well?

Coin toss as to whether the new head is already plugged or not.

If you car has sai, and for some stupid reason you wanted to keep it, then you would need to unplug it on the back.
Going to take dynamite to get that ball out though.

They make block-off plates, but dont think you will be able to do it that way because of the timing cover.
That one in the pic is a 2.8 head I plugged a long time ago. I keep stupid shit like the balls out of old wheel bearings so I just pounded one in and staked it like they do at the factory.

Other options might be another small freeze plug, or pipe plug that will thread in there flush.

So theres a possibility that this head doesn't have this SAI opening, and another possibility that the car never had it?

Yup, flip a coin. Or just take a look at the thing

Regardless of whether or not the head or your car are setup for it, make sure the hole is plugged and get rid of everything associated with sai if need be.

Think I dodged a bullet on this one.
Both front holes are plugged, as well as rear holes.

    Drivers head:

    Passenger head:

Sooooo I only need to worry about replacing the front plug, and making sure there isn't one in the rear, where the coolant tube goes, correct?

Picked up the plug. How are these things inserted into the block?
Piece of wood about the ID of the plug and a mallet?
