    Considering trading 09 A4 for 14 Jetta..thoughts?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have an opportunity to trade my 09 A4 with 110,000 km (69k miles) for a 2014 TDI Jetta with 64,000 km (40k miles). With cash in hand $1000 ( he pays me)

    Car comparison:

2009 A4 2.0T quattro with 6spd Auto, Navigation, sunroof, silver on tan leather w/heated seats, non-sline. Oil consumption free.
The car has extended warranty on the Turbo for another 20k. The only thing it will need is breaks.
Extras: Vogtland coilovers, S4 exhaust conversion, Sprint booster, 20" Niche wheels, Eibach sway bars (front and rear)

2014 Jetta highland (top of the line Jetta) 2.0TDI with 6spd Auto, Navigation, sunroof, white on tan leather, Upgraded speakers system OEM, push to start button, heated steering wheel and seats, 18" OEM rims. Jetta has extended warranty to 200,000 km (130k miles) and will need breaks soon as well.
No extras, but the car has every single upgrade imaginable for a Jetta. The person spent $44k after taxes and all!

The reason for trade is this: I mostly do city driving, and as you all know our cars get beyond horrible milage in the city. I Fill up the car once a week at costco for $57.. The TDI is all city driving as well, fills up once every 3 weeks for less than $50 at regular pumps (gas more expensive by .06c). Our monthly payments and term are identical.

What do you guys think i should do??

I think you're being overly optimistic thinking you're going to achieve 3x the MPG with the TDI, specifically in city driving. If I remember correctly, those do 30-35MPG around town.

How many miles per week do you drive? I'm guessing 250-300, based on you filling up once per week. At first thought, I don't think the fuel savings alone justifies the move (a downgrade, IMO). But having a newer car under warranty has it's benefits

My wife's Touareg gets over 725 a tank as a TDI and it's mostly city driving as well. I know another guy with a Golf TDI that gets around 600 a tank.

Personally, I wouldn't do that trade for a few reasons. 1) The A4 is far more refined in than the Jetta, VW dropped the ball with the MKVI a little in terms of the quality of materials they used and its no longer at near Audi quality. Obviously they're not terrible, and they're still well made cars, but you'll notice a difference. 2) With the whole VW Dieselgate scandal, that TDIs fuel consumption may increase by a notable amount once VW implements its emissions fix basically negating the entire reason you want to buy the car. 3) Just because the owner of the TDI drives mostly in the city doesn't mean his driving style and mileage are the same. He could accelerate slower etc. saving fuel, and he could also drive less than you which has a large impact on how often fill ups are. 4) If that's a Jetta Highline your looking at, I take it you live in canada? From what I understand you guys get quite a bit of snow, so I'd imagine having Quattro would be quite advantageous for you in the winter. With snow tires the Jetta would be good, (though if you throw coilovers on it like your Audi, good luck haha) but it won't be as good as the Audi would be with snow tires.

For me, reasons one and two would really keep me away from the TDI at this point, however if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of refinement and take a chance on the Dieselgate solution, getting the TDI may be a sensible decision for you. Hopefully that helps a little

I get very poor milage actually, around 200-220 KM..not miles, per tank. Ever since I've had oil consumption dealt with the milage has gotten much much worse.
The extended warranty is the primary reason i would do the trade. The fuel savings is just an added incentive. Other than exterior aesthetics and the HP difference and quattro drive the cars are very equally equipped.

Yeah... Your car is broken. That's terrible.

Given that you have other motives beyond fuel savings, too, I say it would definitely be a practical move.

How do would i go about asking for Audi to correct this? in their eyes they have done all the can, any thoughts?

Not sure how its possible to get 2-300km per tank... mine says 750 when i pump and i usually get around 7ish.

I think you should talk to your dealer and if its under warranty see if they can fix it . if it happened after the oil consumption fix then hold them accountable.

I can't advise. Maybe try a different dealer. But sub-10mpg is insane.

Out of curiosity- do you drive with a lead foot? (Although even still- it should not be nearly that low)

That's horrible. There's something wrong with your car. I usually get around 630km per tank and I have a heavy foot.

Given that the '09s were plagued with issues relating to oil consumption and turbos (had mine done and the car was never the same again)....I would try to unload now before it gets to be a nightmare. Your fuel consumption is a good omen. As stated by others above, if you're not getting 500kms per tank then something's wrong. However, I would keep looking for a suitable replacement. That VW sounds like it has a ton of Kms on it given it's age and the current fiasco with VW emissions software on their TDIs would give me reason to reconsider.

Very curious how you are getting such bad mileage, what can cause that? As for the swap I don't know if I'd be happy DD'ing a Jetta but the TDI would maybe make up for it, plenty of torque and the fuel consumption would be nice.

Sure do, i am a very spirited driver. However, it should not affect my milage that much

Twice a month i drive on the highway about 320km round trip and the milage is great.. not really sure whats wrong with the car.

It's not just the gas, that's honestly the least of my worries. As stated above its an added incentive. Im worried that now out of warranty ill have thing go constantly, especially on a first year production car. So far, out of pocket, I've replaced lower control arms, motor mounts, intake manifold and the pct valve.. All this work was done prior to getting the consumption issue resolved. I would do the trade for a peace of mind. Extended warranty to 200km is very appealing!

Ive looked into tuning the TDI. They can certainly deliver lots of torque and hp.

Ive contacted AOC to see if they will do anything about my milage issue. If they do, ill try and resolve it and keep the car, if not ill most likely move to the VW scene. I'll keep you guys posted
