    Question Newly rebuilt turbo smoking

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I installed my turbo that was professionally rebuilt by Tims turbos and as soon as I turned the car on it started smoking it looked like the smoke was coming from the manifold and it smelt burnt. I filled up the coolant reservoir and left the cap off and funnel in it thinking it would suck coolant into the engine when I turned the car on but it didn't suck any coolant in. Should I double check the manifold bolts? Why is my coolant not getting into the engine, and could the lack of coolant cause the smoke so quickly? Any help it much appreciated. Thanks.

Did you send him the the whole unit or just the cartridge. I sent him the whole unit and he used heat paint on the exhaust manifold and it did smell like it was burning the 1st 15 minutes when I ran it. How long did you have the car running. Very possible the thermostat didnt open yet if it never reached operating temperature to suck in the coolant

I sent him the whole unit, and it does have the heat paint on the manifold I never thought of that but I only had it running for about 15-30 seconds max. Should I leave it run for a while and see if it sucks in the coolant as long as it doesn't overheat?

You have to run the engine for about 10 to 15 min for the thermostat to open up so it can suck up the coolant from the bottle. Dont forget to bled the air out system with the 10mm bleeder screw on top of the coolant pipe on top of the motor after it gets hot.

Alright, got my heat on high and coolant reservoir full. It looks like the smoke it actually coming from off the cat. Must have sprayed some WD40 or something on it when I was working on the manifold bolts.

EDIT: now it looks like it's coming from the manifold paint.

Thanks for the confidence booster haha I need that right now. The gauge has been sitting in the middle of C and H for about 5 minutes now, still no hot air in the heater or coolant sucked down yet.

The thermostat is starting to open. The smoke you see if the vapors from the heated coolant. It will probably spill over soon when the thermostat fully opens. Not to worry
