    Question regarding DSG compatibilty

I've searched and searched but could not come up with any threads regarding my question....

Has anyone tried to swap a 2013+ S4 Gen 2 DSG with the crown diff into MYs 2010 to 2012 S4?

I'm aware it should be more economical to just trade the B8 for a B8.5 but I was wondering out of curiosity if its possible or are there variables that i haven't thought of?

I installed some 4 piston Q5 calipers on my brother in laws B8.5 and took it for a drive afterwards and I like the longer gear ratios along with the entire trans just seems to be alot smoother.

Don't know if it is possible but a MUCH more affordable solution is a DSG TUNE. Just got mine done from EPL tuning. $399 til Tuesday than $499 after that. Absolutely changed every aspect of the trani. Much Smoother, crisper, just waaay better. Try that first.

Thanks for the advice Derek, didnt know that EPL offered a DSG tune and what an incredibly competive price versus the competition.

Not that simple. You would need a bunch of new software for the car to reprogram the ESP, ABS, EDL etc. The crown-gear diff is self-locking for example, so where with the torsen diff, the ESP has to intervene at much lower thresholds, with the crown diff, the ESP needs to back off, because the crown gear is able to transfer up to 85% of the torque to the rear and 70% to the front all on its own. The way the car's electronics operate with the crown gear is quite different, so if you don't match the software with the diff, things won't go so well.

You're partially correct that the EPS tuning is different, and the crown diff needs some electronics to control the lock up action. But you don't seem to have a clue how torsen actually works. It's automatic (mechanical in nature, don't need a computer) in terms of how it locks up and transfer power, and it's as good as the crown diff with less wear parts. The reason why Audi went with crown is that they don't have to license the torsen from a 3rd party company anymore. That 3rd party is Toyota.

Before you tell somebody they don't have a clue, make sure your understanding is solid first and backed up by significant personal experience with both of them. I know very well how the torsen works. One of the limitations of the torsen for example is if one axle has zero traction, then nothing is being transferred to the other axle. At that point the ESP needs to intervene and apply braking force to the spinning wheels in order for the torque to be transferred to the axle with traction. The crown gear doesn't have this limitation. The crown-gear with torque vectoring has superior driving dynamics compared to the torsen quattro, but I don't expect you to know that unless you owned both.

EDIT: Here's a quick easy read about how the crown gear drivetrain is superior to the torsen. http://www.audi-technology-portal.de...r-differential

Thank you for taking the time to share both of your knowledge and experiences. I had a feeling that there would be some compatibility issues beyond the hardware.

Kind of reminds me of a situation in work where we had all the appropriate hardware for two units of different manufacturers but to establish communication issues between software certain firmware versions had to be upgraded in one unit and the other unit needed a downgrade.

Thanks again and i wish everyone and their family's a happy and healthy holiday season!
