Preparing My A6 For a Cross Country Trip?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well, this summer I'm planning on taking a massive road trip to San Francisco and back. We've nominated the A6 to be the chariot of choice for this trip and I want to make sure that I can do everything to ensure that it makes it there and back without issues.

Before I leave, I'm planning on getting 02 sensors and fixing my air con along with tires and wheels. Any other items that I should be looking into for a 3,000 mile each way trip? My travelling companion isn't exactly sold on a 16 year old Audi with 108,000 miles crossing the country. I have faith in it though.

Any suggestions on any maintenance items I might need before then?

Check and replace all fluids if it been awhile aka (brake, coolant, power steering, transmission or clutch) new wiper blades. Double check shocks, brake pads, spare tire. Make sure jack works have a tire plug kit and small air compressor, jumper cables. You know basic stuff.

Maybe replace spark plugs and inspect/clean ignition coils while doing that.. Not as much for reliability, but to save on gas.
Also, when was your timing belt done?
PM me if you need to scan your car with vag-com before the trip to see if there are any issues that not obvious.

In addition to all the stuff mentioned above, make sure your suspension is well sorted - especially control arms.

60k. I'm at 108k right now. It's in my near future.

I've already got a vag-com tool, I appreciate the offer though.

The control arms are fairly new looking, probably last 30k.

I'd give a once over. Take just a couple spares for the things that typically fail- ignition modules, spark plugs, coils. A foot or so of vacuum line, couple hose clamps.
If it's not broken and running good and the obvious looks like it has no reason to fail soon then I wouldn't stress and spend a bunch on stuff just because. But that's just me.
Personally- beyond the really typical wear-items, I think any failure you have will be from some component failure that you can't prepare for. Power steering pump, or some electrical gremlin.
We all read the daily break-downs and new problem threads...but honestly these cars are pretty stout and reliable. ESPECIALLY on the highway.

Good idea, I have utmost faith in this car to get me there and back without problem, got to be prepared either way though.

Knock on wood, but these cars seem a lot more reliable than people make them out to be....

I've done a couple 3k, one 5k and a handful of 2k mile trips with my now 135k stage 2+ allroad and never had an issue. I think like said above some vacuum hose is good, also clamps and zip ties and a small toolbox, you'll be set.

I also just took my 160k C4 A6 o o 3k trip and it was an absolute PEACH.

if you kept up on regular maintenance you should be fine.
honestly daily driving a-b is more abusive than a all highway trip
