    Oil drain plug leak question

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    2005 3.2 L and I've got a slow, insidious leak from the oil drain plug. I've been looking at either A) Replacing the lower oil pan, or B) Taping and Heli-Coiling it. Anyone have a similar problem/ Solution?

    Thaks a ton

    Oil drain plug leak question

    Do you know what is causing the leak? Is the oil pan cracked at the plug?

    Did you change the crush washer? They stipulate to do this each change but I've done about 20 oil changes with the same plug and washer with no issue. I'd start with that. Could also just be some dirt or something between the washer and the pan.

    I hadn't thought of that, and I see how that could cause an issue. I'm willing to bet that there is something between the crush washer and the pan.

    Once you resolve the leak, you should look into getting a mightyvac. You can change the oil topside, and since the filter is up there too, you never need to jack the car up. Also never have to remove the drain plug.

    I had an oil leak around there too on my 4.2L. I changed the crush washed washer and the leak was gone. since they are only like $1 a piece, I bought like 8 of them and chance it every oil change. no leaks since.

    I did away with the whole oil drain plug, crusher, etc...years ago. I purchased and installed this and could not be happier: http://www.qwikvalve.com/

    I can start and finish my oil change in less than 20 mins from start to finish! The hardest part is cleaning up my oil catch pan ;)

    FYI! Straight from the Indys mouth;

    "Audi changed there crush washers recently. I had to put 2 on your drain plug"

    I had a slow oil leak from the pan at the plug after MY most recent oil change and the indy informed me of the new crush washers. I had zero problems up until this - and after he put 2 on it I have not had a leak yet.

    I am 100% confident that this is your issue.

    I've hit speed bumps and no issue whatsoever. Based upon where it's placed and mounted, I'd be more likely to sheer my entire oil pan than have this thing sheer off. My car is lowered and even then I've never had any issues and been running it for years. Like I said, it's probably one of the best mods I've ever done and so convenient form a maintenance perspective...especially after I made an access door in the shield with a piano hinge and some super strong magnets.

    Well, installed the new drain plug and crush washers, still have a slow leak. I was looking at the threads in the oil pan and they look like they are stretched out from over torquing. Anyone ever just tap the hole and go from there, or should I just replace the oil pan?

    Was it an OE drain plug? When I got mine, someone had put an aftermarket one in. It leaked. I replaced it with an OE one and the problems went away. The other one had considerably more play in it.

    Has anyone tried using a self tapping drain plug? If so, did it work?
