daily drive the s4 or not, first world problems.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just rolling some ideas around in my head and thought id bounce them off you guys.

    Short version:
I have two cars, an A4 and an S4, currently the A is my daily and the S is for fun. Trying to decide if i should sell the A4 and just make my S the daily driver.

    Detailed Version.
    2011 A4 Premium, 6mt, 25k miles.
    2008 S4 Avant, 6mt, 73k miles

The A4 is my daily commuter and put about 30miles on it a day.
Things i am thinking about in my head..

    * Both cars are worth about the same right now (~20k) but the A4 will depreciate more than the wagon in the next couple years.
    * If the avant was pristine i could rationalize it living in the garage, but the previous owner treated it as their daily driver (8/10 condition - some dings & paint chips) so i feel like i should just enjoy it.

Those two points push me hard into the 'fuck it see the a4 and drive the s!

But then the other side of me goes..
    * driving the A4 reduces maintenance expenses on the s4.
    * murphy's law probably says something about how as soon as sell the a4 the chain guides will shatter into a millions pieces.

What would you guys do? thoughts?

Sell B8, buy a cheaper daily. Keep Avant for fun and fix blemishes over time.

S4 needs to be a daily. It's not good enough for a weekend driver.

Dont be a wiener. daily the S4

Whats the fun in having toys if you dont use them? The recaros in the S4 should be more than enough reason to plant your keister in that day in and day out

Isn't owning 2 cars more expensive than simply owning the one and incurring extra maintenance?

Your worried that if you daily the S4 it'll need extra maintenance, possibly including a timing chain service. If you put $20k in your pocket from selling the A4, or a lesser amount and eliminate a monthly payment, plus no longer have to incur insurance, property taxes, etc. on the A4...wouldn't that more than cover the cost of any extra maintenance on the S4?

Same dilemma here, but the more I think of it the more I just want to garage the thing. This is the nicest car I have ever owned and I am inclined to want to just baby the hell out of it and fix all of the minor things over time. But those Recaros...oh baby! looking forward to my three hour drive to Seattle later today.

Yup. Not only is the wagon not good enough for a weekend driver, but its a perfect balance of fun/functionality for the daily.

SOlid advice. But ima move 'drive the piss out of it' to the front of the list

Clear and concise. i like it. :D

Strictly speaking financially, yes owning these two cars costs more than owning one.

I have a used stick family sedan for daily. I only drive my 04 S4 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to prolong its life. I've had it since new and have 69K on it. I won't spend the money for a replacement, so this works well for me. The S4 is in super shape and runs strong as ever. It's had a gentle life with me.

Sell both. Get a B8 S4 and some mods. Or get a 997 C2S. Or a 993 weekend car and a cheap VW daily.

Do you owe money on either?
What is your monthly insurance payment for one, the other, and both?

Your gas expenses will double if you use the s4 as a daily. Easily doubled, if not a little more. I was at about 220-240 per month in JUST gas for a while. And if youre not spending that much in gas, that means youre short tripping...and you probably shouldnt be short tripping this car. I really miss my car already, but I guess I sleep a little easier at night knowing I A.)dont have to spend 3 to 6 grand to replace chain guides (hoping the shop does it right) and B.) Am saving about 150 per month on gas/insurance savings. But that was mostly my justification. Others will differ. I will be back in a S eventually

The thing I like about having two cars is that if you want to work on one you don't have to get it done in one day, and if one brakes you have one to drive while you are fixing the other one. I find it to be a big stress reliever and find I am able to do better work because I don't feel rushed when working on it.

yup...just south of PDX. I had to stop at the Stealership in Wilsonville along the way to get a set of wiper blades. The chattering was driving nuts! But a fun drive otherwise.

No money owed on either. Insurance is right at 900 per car per year.

I daily my supercharged Avant. I couldn't see myself dailying an A4. It would make me miserable, especially knowing I have an S4 in the garage (so if I had both, the A4 would be collecting dust because I'd never want to drive it so what would be the point in having it).

To each their own though. Lots of people have weekend cars. I just think I would want to be driving my weekend car all week long as well.

Agreed. When I had my CTS-V and S4 for a few months, I couldn't decide some days which car to drive. But if I had an A4 and S4, no question I'm taking the S.

I'd sell the A4... that I never wouldn't bought it I already had an S.
