Need advice on oil consumption issue after speaking with AoA

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Quick Overview:

    • I bought my 2010 A4 CPO on April 2, 2013 with under 50,000 miles. (Prior to my ownership, stage 1 repairs were performed in 2012)
    • Received letter on class action suit regarding Oil Consumption(2014)
    • Took my car in to Mckenna Audi (Norwalk, CA) with about 71,000 miles for stage 1 oil consumption because I was burning a quart about every 2000 miles. (Feb 14, 2015)
    • Stage 1 repairs were made and was told to drive 600 miles and then bring it back. (Feb 14,2015)
    • Brought car back after driving about 1000 miles and was told I was burning .29qt per 1000 miles which is PASSING (early March 2015)
    • Just 4-5 weeks later, I realized my AMI showed my oil level going down as before stage 1.
    • Spoke with Mckenna Audi and was told, burning oil is normal and I passed with stage 1 repairs so there's nothing I can do. (Summer 2015)
    • Believed the nonsense and went on with my life for about 3-4 months. Car is now past 80,000 miles. (Sept 2015)

Here's where the story picks up. I began to really look into the Oil Consumption Thread and realized I should keep a log of my oil consumption. After collecting enough data to realize there's no way I am within the normal consumption rate, I decided to push for stage 2 repairs. I called McKenna Audi and explained to them that I was still burning oil. The service manager insisted that my car is fine because it passed back when they performed stage 1. I told him that I've been keeping a log and I know it's burning more than it should. He was no help and so I called AoA. AoA spoke with Mckenna's Service Mgr and then called me and said the dealer is willing to redo stage 1 at my cost. I then called the Service Mgr and he pretty much told me my car is gonna pass again. That's when I realized he wasn't willing to help me.

So I called Penske Audi in West Covina and made an appointment with them to perform stage 1 for me. On Oct 17, 2015, I went in, I paid $154 and they performed stage 1 and told me to drive until the oil light came on.My car has 85082 miles at this point. 5 weeks later, a day before thanksgiving day, my oil light comes on and so I take it in first thing in the morning on Black Friday. I pay to have the oil measurement made and they return telling me my car clearly failed stage 1 (burning .53qt /1000 miles). They advised me to call AoA to see how to proceed. Of course, AoA was closed for the entire Thanksgiving Weekend and so I called them Monday of this week and a case was opened for me and was told by the AoA rep that I would receive a call from another rep within 2 days.

Today I receive a call from an AoA rep who explained to me that since I'm out of the 80,000 mile mark, there is nothing they can do for me, however, the dealer at Penske West Covina is going to let AoA know by this Friday (Dec 4) of any Good Will repairs that can be arranged for me.

While I wait to see what kind of offer I receive from Penske Audi, I've been thinking whether I should dispute the Stage 1 repairs with McKenna. McKenna's Service Mgr told me Stage 1 was supposed to fix my consumption issue, but it clearly hasn't, since I have proof that I need stage 2 repairs from Penske Audi. Should I contact the lawyers that worked on the class action suit to see if they can help? I truly feel I've been duped by Mckenna.

Should I be consuming the same amount of oil after stage 1 repairs? Should I really need stage 2 repairs if stage 1 really fixed it? Do I have a case of any sort? I feel like I went out and got a second opinion that clearly disqualifies whatever Mckenna claims regarding the oil consumption on my car.

What do you guys think? I am now at about 87500 miles.

Same exact thing happened to me. Don't expect anything from that "goodwill" call, you'll get hung out to dry just like me. Just be lucky you're not burning more oil than you are. A quart every 2k miles is nothing compared to what some of us are burning with our out of warranty A4s. Sucks, but so it goes in Audiland.

If you pursue it with AOA any further then I would bring up the discrepancy between the read outs in the few months that the additional stage 1 test was done and that when you were going to the other dealer you were given the it's normal line and felt as if they weren't willing to look into it further even with your evidence to the contrary. Is this going to do much to push Audi to help you, probably not, but if you don't try it will definitely not help. Hopefully Penske will step up and take care of it.

Sounds like a terrible service department.

In Santa Clara I took my car for the same oil consumption test at least 2 times, maybe 3. Then the last one it finally failed and they began Stage 1 repair. Didn't help and then I got stage 2. I was always stern and they worked with me. Your service departments just sound awful, like they don't want to help. Sorry buddy.

I didn't know there was a mileage limit on the repairs.

Yeah, once you pass 80,000 miles, the warranty coverage is no longer applicable. Were you beyond the 80,000 mile mark.

Not to mention, getting a stage 1 fix and having that "fix" the problem absolves them legally from having to do any further repairs under the oil consumption class action suit after something like 10k miles. It sounds counterintuitive but when buying an affected A4 used you're better off getting one that's never received that fix as you're officially screwed if it's still burning oil.

You should continue to push them. Now, this is Canada, but I had all stages of the oil consumption fixes done at no charge when I was at 146,000 kms (66,000 kms beyond my warranty). I was consuming considerably more oil......they logged it during stage 1 testing at .9 l/1000kms so basically a quart every 600 miles. I have a very good relationship with the dealership that I took it to so I think that had a lot to do with it.....they were willing to go to bat for me with AofC.

.25 within a 1000 miles is consider failing, that is what i was told, but my car was buring 1.82 per 1000 miles, 56k miles on my 2010, i had to come out of pocket for the stage one test, because it was done at 28k and passed, i would fight it.
