    Exclamation Stripped Studs

Ahem...whilst upon reinstalling my turbo, things just weren't lining up correctly, the damn manifold just wouldn't wann go into place and I thought, "hey why don't I just force it on!" (Eureka right?) to make a long story short, I've got two stripped studs and two stripped nuts, those being the ones that hold the manifold in place. I messed up entirley. Guess I got too excited to see my car run after 4 months of dormancy. What are my options for DIY?

Replace stud and nut, install manifold.

Oh... The holes in the cylinder head itself are stripped? Only thing I can think of would be to use a helicoil.

Helicoil the hole and put a new stud in. Problem solved.

^^^^^this orby drill and tap oversize. Use oversize stud and nutz. You can get them from https://www.fastenal.com/ Had experiences with heli coil exhaust studs and bolts. They tend to expand and contract to much for the application

If you go with an oversized stud, you may need to drill out the manifold.

Should I decide to go oversize, would m10 be ideal?

Id just ed, the M10 looked like the size of the exhaust studs from the catalytic converter. That would be to thick. Mite have to the heli-coil trick like aluthman suggested.

Should probably ask this too, are any of the nuts/studs on the exhaust Manifold used for piloting or should everything just fit like a glove back into place immediately

Nope, the manifold is held in place mainly by the lower shelf setup. The studs along the top simply hold it tight against the head.

A place between here and there

Relevance to thread, is the female threads on the cylinder head stripped for sure?

I ask because this happened to me and I heli coiled for no reason. After the first one, figured just try and see if a "brand new" stud would go in. Lo and behold, threads in and locked no problem. So, didn't even have to heli coil the other ones in. Even though the "stud" male threads are stripped, doesn't necessarily mean the cylinder head female threads are stripped too. But by looking at the stud threads, you would expect it to be. This happened to both my cylinder head valve cover studs and exhaust manifold studs (few of each). So in a nutshell, first try and place a "brand new" stud in first. You may be surprised. You can also try chasing the threads first, too.

I particularly don't like heli coiling these studs because you have to be pretty much precise with the angle. The further end of the stud when finished will reveal how much off you really were...and it can cause another situation. This also happened to me and had to drill all my manifold holes slightly larger to compensate. Sucked ass!
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch
