    Exhaust question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I currently have a stage one s4. It's auto :( I have a custom 3 inch exhaust with a single mid muffler. It's just not loud enough and the exhaust doesn't "open up" enough if that makes sense. I tried straight 3" but that was horrible inside the car. Are there any other options? I was thinking fart can (lol I know dumb) because there always loud but aren't quite straight pipe loud

Also my 3 inch is just a catback. It's all stock from the turbo to the cats.

try aftermarket downpipes first. the stock cats gobble up a fair amount of the sound. So a set of downpipes with the single mid-muffler catback will likely land you in that sweet spot of sound you are looking for.

This is probably the best exhaust. It's exactly the same as the original UUC VM3. Loved this exhaust when I when I had k03s still.

Honestly, I didn't notice any difference in note between stock downpipes to piggies with my UUC VM3.

I think adding a resonator to a straight piped setup could yield the sound you are looking for, but single exhausts tend to be droney on these cars.

For what it's worth, my SSAC/SRM exhaust (catless 3-2.5" dps) and twin one is extremely tame while cruising and does not drone much if at all inside the car. But when you get on it, it's loud. Like loud enough to where my brother driving a few cars behind me at highway speed with music blasting could hear my car when I took off.

I'm an auto as well. First exhaust I had was an APR catback. It was SO quiet, and I was elated to have gotten a hookup for straight pipes from a buddy. I also did piggies on the stock DPs in march. I'm pretty sure I am aware what you mean by open up, and with the straight pipes it definitely does that when accelerating through 2nd and 3rd in tip mode. You're right about the drone it is pretty loud but for smile it puts on my face when I WOT its worth it. Plus the music usually drowns it out. To answer your question though, 3" DPs will likely help quite a bit with the sound you're looking for, but a muffler will diminish it. If you really want the open up straight pipes are the way to go.

Only problem with down pipes is right now funds aren't that accessible for that and I've read you have to pull the motor. I don't want to pull the motor for just downpipes lol. Currently it doesn't drone at all. And the muffler is some v chamber one the exhaust shop had that I went to. They said it's the loudest muffler they had. I can try a resonator but idk if they have a 3 inch one or not. I just want it to be louder when getting on it but not be stupid loud when driving around town and cruising.

No, you do not have to pull the motor. Downpipes are actually pretty easy, I just did mine a few months ago. You have to undo the rear of the subframe and let it droop down in order to have enough clearance to snake the old downpipes/heatshields out and put the new ones in.

Auto is different. The trans is bigger therefore less room to work with and if you get aftermarket DP's MAKE SURE you get the tiptronic ones. Manual will not fit. It could be a PIA though if your turbo nuts/bolts are rusted on there. If you do them without pulling the motor, spray some pbblaster everyday a few days before attempting to remove them.

That is a great sounding exhaust.

OP, My experience is if you want to hear a mean sound at wot but diminish cruising drone, do mid mufflers/resonators only, not rear.

My old 3" dp to single 3.5" with mid muffler only was the perfect mix of wot sound and minmal highway drone. I loved it!

What kind of 'exhaust shop' are you using? Unless it's a shop that does a lot of aftermarket work, their "loudest" muffler might still be fairly reserved.

But IMO, 3" piping with a single unrestrictive(aka: "loudest") muffler usually isn't what I'd consider 'quiet'. And what are you saying about a 3" resonator not being available? There are likely hundreds of 3" resonators to choose from.

No rear muffler happy, and goalie I meant I dont think the exhaust shop had a 3 inch resonator in stock. When they originally did the exhaust for me they put a straight through style muffler that had like glass around straight through part. That was super quiet so I took it back and they put the same size muffler but v chamber style and it got a TINY bit louder. But it's nothing close to what I wish

That muffler seems like it would be loud... but can't findo any car with it besides v8. But it does open up a v8 pretty good.

So how much money do you have into it now with all of these revisions? Unless you're getting hooked up, seems likely that you could've just purchased a full system for similar costs.

There's a giant exhaust thread on here and a little site called YouTube that will give you tons of exhaust sounds. This is something basic enough that you shouldn't have to spend time/money trying out a bunch of different mufflers.

I know the guy who owns the exhaust shop. So he hooked me up with at 300 for the 3 inch catback out of stainless

That's your car monty? Sounds nasty but I assume you have downpipes... as of right now I'm stuck with the stock ones.
