Stock Continental Summer Tires vs Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I currently have the stock summer tires on my car and planning a road trip to NY.
If it snows, I don't plan on driving around much in NY but I am looking to get at least all seasons on my car.
Running a summer and winter set would be ideal, but I live in NC where we don't see much winter and I don't think it would be necessary.

Based on the reviews, it looks like the AS/3 is the best performing all season tire.
I know they are in different categories (summer vs all season) but how would the AS/3 perform against the stock Conti's?

If you are in NC year round with an occasional trip to a snowy area then buying dedicated winter tires is likely a waste. The AS/3 is probably one of the best performing AS tires out there. You may also want to check out the DWS06. I will tell you that attempting to drive on the stock Conti summer tires in the snow is extremely dangerous and to not even think about it.

I have both the DWS06 and Pilot AS/3 on two of my cars right now. I love them both. The Pilots seem better in the dry than the Conti.. But in wet they are both great. Haven't had too much experience I'm the snow the Michelin but the Conti hold up very well.

IMHO the PS AS/3 is better than the stock Continentals in performance (both dry and rain), noise, and longevity (I got ~17K out the Contis and have ~20K on my PS AS/3 and they're around half worn)

plus, now that it's getting colder out you can still run them and not feel like you're driving on hockey pucks

Thanks! Looks like I will go with the AS/3s to run all year round.
I just didn't want to spend $1k for a set of tires to drive around NY for 5 days. Especially if the AS/3s would be worse off in dry conditions than the stock Conti's.

My Conti's are at 7/32 tread life, so I guess I'll just store them as a back up.

Love my AS/3s. You can't go wrong with them (if you must run all seasons).

I previously had Conti DWS, but now have and prefer the Michelin AS/3s.

The Conti DWS have allegedly better performance in snow, but for all else the AS/3 are superior.

The A/S 3's perform extremely well in all seasons EXCEPT snow. I would not drive in deep snow or ice with the A/S 3's, if you get caught in such weather then just be mindful as they are no substitute for true winter tires. Here on the west coast they do just fine as we rarely see more than a few inches of snow

I don't plan on driving in deep snow but might drive in light snow. I'll only be in NY for 5 days so I'm hoping I won't have to deal with much.
Do you think it will still be an issue with the AS/3?

I assume the AS/3 would be better off in light snow than any summer tire though, right?

It's that time of the year for the obligatory summer/AS/winter tire video.

In winter, summer tires<a/s tires<<<<<<<<<winter tires

A Pilot A/S is a UHP A/S - it will be closer to a summer tire vs an A/S tire in terms of winter performance. Get the Pilot A/S for better wear and getting you home in case the temps drop into the 30's with some precipitation. Otherwise, don't think you can get away with a UHP A/S in the winter.

How have people's experiences been in terms of just dry/wet performance of these A/S vs. stock summer tires for summer use? Wondering if the handling is comparable, and you get the advantage of better thread life.

I went from the OEM dunlops Sportmaxx GTs to the A/S3s and actually like them more for warm weather performance. Granted my dunlops were worn towards the end, they were pretty horrible. If I had to get new tires again I would get the A/S3s 10/10 times. Add in the treadwear advantage and not having to swap my wheels around, I sold my winter set and haven't looked back.

I DO miss the Wintersport 3Ds when we get snow, but I can still get around okay if I need to on those 2 days a year where there is actually snowpack on the roads here.

Just put some DWS06 on my car, such a difference in ride from summers but I had good luck with DWS last winter and for the amount of time I drive in the snow they held their own. They are definitely more comfy, but not half as sporty.
