Pretty loud ticking has started recently and it is coming from the metal tubing circled in the pic below. Any ideas what this is for or perhaps what it is attached to that could be causing the ticking?[IMG][/IMG]

Is it the long horizontal tube or the short vertical one? Where does it lead to?

It's the short vertical one. Not exactly sure what it runs to. I'm getting a metallic ticking that goes along with my RPMs. Thanks for your help.

I have a small ticking noise, but from a different piece the has a hose clamp on it. My ticking is just because it is tapping a different part. I also noticed your car has an oil dipstick. Mine is all electronically monitored by a gauge inside the car. That not the problem, but I'm pointing out difference's I will be pulling apart my car tonight to see where that tube goes and what it's for. Im guessing it could be a coolant line or oil, Otherwise I'm clueless right now.

Pretty sure that its coolant line I looked it up, but I'm not 100% sure.

After looking and following the metal pipe it goes to the high pressure fuel pump sitting at the back of the engine. The solenoid cap can wear out and cause the end of it to tap the cam follower. Which I guess is the metallic ticking I am hearing. Using my stethoscope all of the ticking comes from the pipe and HPFP itself. Every place else all I hear are the injectors. Changing it out shortly to make sure no damage has Coke to my cam follower as all of that was replaced by Audi warranty a couple years back.

I would think that is a normal sound for a fuel pump that is driven off of a cam follower. Do you have another car (the same details obviously) that you can compare to?

I have an older Porsche and the injectors are super loud and that is "normal".

I am familiar with the normal ticking with these engines. Just recently it is a lot louder and is a metallic ticking. I purchased the cam follower from ECStuning and am replacing it when it shows up. If that doesn't resolve it then maybe the HPFP.
