S5 cluster swap into A5 S-Line

This weekend I finally got the courage to rip into my A5 and adapt a used S5 cluster I bought a few months back.

Set the component protection to virgin. Adapted the cluster to my car and reset the mileage.

Absolutely love the look of it. The colour LCD makes a massive difference. And the white needles are so nice.
It's hard to keep my eyes on the road now.

I had to remove the eeprom to get the component data for my car off it.

Then virgin the cluster, adapt to my car and set the mileage.
Took about 2 hours.

Ive seen my boy change the mileage around on a b8 s4. Didn't ask how because I simply wasn't interested.. But that's a pretty cool swap. Back when I had my b6, the a4 guys couldn't swap the clusters unless you find a way to work around the immobilizer

Can you share what tools you used to locate and transfer the relevant data? I've got a serious interest in being able to do my own component protection stuff for a possible MMI 3G swap. Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not post it.

You can use Abrites AVDI to do this.
You can also do MMI.
It is not plug it in and press buttons though.
You must know how to remove and read eeproms and use a BDM type programmer to get information from flash is some cases.

I'm assuming this is for non-US models? US models only go to 160mph.

Yeah I'm sitting here looking at google images of A5 instrument clusters and they looked the same as my RS. I personally like the contrast between the red/orange needle on the white numbers.

Mine is a 2010 S-Line and it didn't come with the colour display.

Either way I'm happy now..

It's very strange that Audi changed the B8.5s to only 160 MPH considering a delimited S5 will easily exceed that, and has shown to be capable of over 190mph with a tune. It just feels wrong.

I'm sure they were responding to consumers, and felt they were wasting too much space with normal highway speeds only reaching 9 o'clock on the speedometer, but they could have used smaller increments for the early segment as some other manufacturers have done.

yeah its very deceptive when i drive my wife's A5 and i'm doing 80 and its at 10 o clock when most cars its at 1 o clock.. and with the Audi being so smooth you never realize you're speeding

What's your thoughts on just changing the center display so it's in color?

It is very easy to change the display. It's a separate module that has a connector. Not like the old ones where soldering is involved.

Wether it would just plug and play, not work, or go up in smoke is another question.

I have not tried it...
